Today, it is really impossible to count the number of articles regarding the pretended Skype protocol’s cracking.
To be honest, I was pretty sure that it would have happened, and chinese engineers are usually expert in copying something. Anyway, I’m still not sure it really happened. And, if it happened, it is far from being something that Skype’s guys can fear… I’d like to have that demo client in my hands. Otherwise, just a few screenshots, and I can post on my blog exactly the same news
Anyway, even if this story is not true, the best choice for Skype is to open up, as also Alec Saunders suggests. He also asks an interesting question:
“Would SIP survive? Who knows. But we, consumers and developers, would all benefit”
I think that Skype protocol can be an alternative to SIP, but my only concern is that it’s not just a matter of protocol, but a matter of architecture of the p2p network. And, there are still a lot of issues about it.

When one sees the number of chinese copies of the best italian products, cracking Skypes protocol was probably a piece of cake. Easier when its virtual
Beyond the P2P nature of Skype, I doubt they will be opening up. The way every Skype client plays relay for other is not that clear.
I doubt you’d be out of business by using SIP soon. But from a business stand point, I understand that not being able to communicate with the Skype user base can be frustrating
