This article by Kathy Sierra very well points out a big mistake done by many companies in every field, technological and not. To better explain this concept, I’ll refer to italian mobile operators as an example.
Here in Italy mobile operators literally bomb us out with hundred of TV spots about this or that new promotion if you become their customer. And, if you demonstrate you’re leaving one of the competitors, they offer you more. But, what about existing users ? Mobile operators are just an example, you can find many more in every market.
I agree with Kathy when she says:
If the best way to help create passionate users is by helping users learn and get better, then we should put our power to entice, motivate, and inspire someone to buy more, and use it to entice, motivate, and inspire someone to learn more. In the end, those passionate users will evangelize our product or service far more credibly and honestly than we can.
The best promoter of your product is your user, so help him to better understand your product and make him love it!
