Tom Keating reports that Digium released today AsteriskNOW, a “notforgeeks” plug&play version of their popular soft-IPPBX.
Digium today released AsteriskNOW, a turnkey easy-to-use version of Asterisk with a web-based GUI that they claim can get a working version of Asterisk up-and-running in 30 minutes. AsteriskNOW is Digium’s answer to the popular trixbox “plug and play” Asterisk distro. Previously, AsteriskNOW was in beta, so today is the first day that it is available as a general release. The AsteriskNOW GUI lets users add, modify and delete users. Download options include ISO/CD Image, VM Player image, Xen universal guest image and LiveCD (burn and boot).
In addition, Tom mentioned that it seems that Digium is working closely with Polycom so that their IP phones can be automatically provisioned. I have a Polycom IP phone on my desk and it’s automatically configured as soon as I plug it to the network, but our sysadmins had to do some work to make it happen. So, this move is really not bad. “Simplify” is, again, the keyword.
AsteriskNOW is available for download on the new AsteriskNOW website. I look forward to taking a deeper look at this in the following days.
