N73, N93, N80i: which is for you ?

by Luca Filigheddu on January 30, 2007

As most of my readers should know, I’m involved in the Nokia Bloggers Relation program, so I have the opportunity to test all of those mobile phones in deep. Moreover, I look forward to compare them with the upcoming N95, that should be included in the program as well.

After a few months of experiments and continuous daily usage, I can write down a few considerations about “which of these phones is for whom”.

N73
A great mobile phone. Slim, light, you feel it comfortable in your hands. Keyboard is a little bit small, but most people can deal with it. I’ve borrowed it to my father for a few days in order to verify its usability and I can say that the result is great. Now my father can send and receive SMSs and MMSs easily. Disclosure: my father is exactly the opposite of a geek :-)

Pros:
- big display
- fantastic 3.2 Mpix camera (photo quality is the best among these three phones)
- good looking, in particular the red-white model

Cons:
- small keyboard
- no Wi-fi
- no VoIP

N93
More, much more than a mobile phone. It’s a really a multimedia device, that you can easily use in place of your still and video camera. Despite photo quality, for me, is a little bit worse than N73, it can take full advantage of the Zeiss optics so the result is great anyway. Unfortunately it’s too big for me, a problem that should have been solved with the N93i.

Pros:
- big display
- good camera
- Wi-fi
- flip (I like phones with flip)

Cons
- big size
- no VoIP

N80i
Unlike the other two phones, it’s much more a business phone. While the 3Mpix camera is worse than the previous two (no Zeiss’s optics) and it lacks in terms of useful tools included in the N73 and N93’s camera software, the high resolution display, Wifi and VoIP are enough to justify its cost. Moreover, it’s faster than the others.

Pros:
- high resolution display
- Wi-Fi
- “i”, that means Internet edition. A lot of cool software available. But it’s just a matter of firmware
- VoIP
- small size

Cons:
- battery life (if you use Wifi continuously, you have to bring the charger in your pocket)
- small display (yes, high definition, but it’s smaller than the others).

All this said, which is the best for you ? I’ve already shared my thoughts. But if I had to choose among the three phones above, I would choose the N80i, definitely.

Good summary. One comment about photo quality: I'd rate the devices for this attribute as N93 best (noisy, with artefacts, but good handling of bright sunlight and good focussing); N73 next (smooth photos, good focus but lousy handling of bright sunlight); N80 (no focussing)

I personally own a N80i and must say I'm pretty impressed by everything it packs especially the WiFi and the speed compared to the other 2 phones which I've used before. The only problems I actually have are as mentioned the battery and unmentioned the lag in my application manager as well as the slider. The slider isn't spring loaded so it slides up slightly in your pocket the slider isn't properly secured down.

Hello. Can you please tell how can I distinguish Nokia N80Internet Edition from Nokia N80 normal edition. There are two versions of the this phone. Please reply for my e-mail macnet@zmail.pt.Thank you.Best regards from Portugal
  • It's just a matter of firmware, so in terms of the software installed. Take a look into the application folder... you should find a couple of applications like Flickr and Gizmo project.
