Yesterday I had a chat with Mike Hudack, Blip.tv’s CEO. I’ve known Blip.tv through Jeff Pulver who hosted a presentation from Dina Kaplan during the latest VON Events.

Blip.Tv.Badge

From their website:

We’ve got a great service for great shows. We believe that the world is fundamentally changing as it becomes easier and easier for individuals and small groups of people to create their own video. Our mission is to make this even easier by taking care of all the problems a budding videoblogger, podcaster or Internet TV producer would run into. We’ll take care of the servers, the software, the workflow, the advertising and the distribution. Your focus should be on creativity.

Mike well explained what Blip.tv is going to do during 2007 and what are the main differences between his company and companies like, let’s say, Brightcove. In particular he pointed out that they’re focused on independent content creators who want to make their shows visible over the internet without having to deal with the technology and infrastructure for doing that.

Their business model is based on advertising. They integrate advertising inside videos, so that it would be always visible by users. They have six companies advertising on Blip.tv and their plans for 2007 is to increase this number and, above all, number of shows which are worth for advertisers.

As with everything else on blip.tv, our advertising program is extensive and fully customizable. You opt-in. You pick your advertising partner. You decide when and where your advertisments appear on your content. Then you sit back and watch them follow your content throughout blip.tv’s vast distribution channels.

Speaking about technology, on the client side they support any kind of video format, performing server-side transcoding when needed. Video quality seems poor in comparison with Brightcove, anyway it should depend on the video source.

Video example from Blip.tv (Technorati buzz TV):

One of the most intriguing part of the story is that Blip.tv videos are already available on iTunes so that you can subscribe and watching them on your PC or, better, on the upcoming AppleTV. To me this is a killer-move to make independent videos widely available to consumers. And it’s surely a big opportunity for advertisers.

In conclusion, I’ll take a deeper look at Blip.tv. Unlike other competitors, they’re focusing on the many millions independent video creators who want to become visible to the mass, offering high-quality contents. Is Blip.tv + AppleTV + broadband the new face of IPTV ? Why do I need to use so much bandwidth with traditional TV channels when I can always get what I want whenever I want by just downloading it from iTunes ?

Yes, that's what I've supposed. In general, I've not found any particular issue. Thanks for your comment!

    Hey Luca,

Just wanted to drop you a line and say that our video quality should be at least as good as Brightcove for the same source video :)

If not, please point us to a particular video and we'll find out why and fix it. Right away.

    Yours,

    Mike
