News roundup

I’m receiving a lot of press releases from different companies, I’m sorry I can’t find enough time to offer all of them the proper visibility. Here’s a quick summary of some big news which caught my attention:

Fring news
Fring, a mobile VoIP client I’ve reviewed a few months ago has released a new version. Here are the main updates:

MSN Messenger – Now you can talk and chat with your MSN Messenger AND Skype and Google Talk contacts.

Significant Battery Life Improvement – Battery consumption improved by over 300%!

Improved Voice Quality and Latency – You wouldn’t believe it’s not GSM!

Call history – Now you get a voice call log which includes:
o Missed calls

o Contact name

o Contact type: GSM, Skype, Google & MSN Messenger

o Date & time of each call

o Shows if call is outgoing or received

Volume Control – Now you can adjust the volume of a call during a conversation.

Bug Fixes

I like Fring. It’s a clear demonstration that mobile VoIP is here, now. I’ll try ti find some time to give it another try soon. I’ve installed it on myy N80i, but not used yet. Congratulations Boaz & Co!

Telephony2 is here
Telephony2 is the new name of WorksOut Software Inc. Their new name is a clear demonstration of what they are going to do. CallButler is the new VoIP application for Soho and SMEs they just launched. While looking at the available features, I’m really impressed. Here’s a quick summary:

  • Give your business an inexpensive toll free 1-800 or local number.
  • Answer customer calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. CallButler works even when you aren’t.
  • Allow customers to service themselves by automatically answering their common questions (in multiple languages).
  • Transfer callers to employees, and other telephones and faxes.
  • Use your existing work, home and mobile phones as extensions.
  • Play your favorite MP3s for customers while they are on hold.
  • Allow your customers to leave voicemail messages and even have them Emailed to you.

The SightSpeed guy becomes famous
Peter Zottolo, head of customer service at SightSpeed, became famous a few months ago with “The SightSpeed Guy videos”.

Now he had the opportunity to join DirectTV to take part to a new show called “The Fizz Newzz”.

Zottolo will provide commentary and introduce other Fizz Newzz bloggers, currently numbering about a dozen. Each will provide his or her own perspective on news topics ranging from politics and current events to entertainment and sports. Zottolo records his portion of the show using SightSpeed from the PC on his desk at the company’s headquarters in Berkeley. He then e-mails it off to the show’s producers, who edit in contributions from other participants, all of whom were discovered through their video posts on the Internet.

More details on Peter Csathy’s blog (SightSpeed’s CEO).
