bOK is a new mobile VoIP service that lets you make cheap phone calls straight from your mobile phone.
Users don’t need to download any software client but they only need to send a text message to a specific bOK number, inserting the phone number they want to call as the content of the message. After that, they immediately receive a call back, take the call and start talking.
At first sight, it seems easy to use, at the cost of a SMS message. In addition and for a limited time, calls made to US and Canada numbers are completely FREE of charge (if you have a plan that lets you receive unlimited calls for free).
According to the photos on their website, it seems they are targeting young users, surely sensible when it comes to save money. Most international routes are available, even if I wasn’t able to check the rates out since I had a problem loading that webpage (Safari was the problem?).
Unfortunately this service is now available for US and Canada citizens only. That means that you cannot use it to call your friends or colleagues in those countries for free if you live abroad.
The idea to setup a call through an SMS is nice even if not new. It can quickly become a valid alternative to other similar services.
