According to Reuters, Apple is planning to launch a “nano” version of their hot product of the year, the iPhone.
Kevin Chang, a JP Morgan analyst based in Taiwan, cited people in the supply channel he did not name and an application with the U.S Patent and Trademark office for his report dated July 8.
Apple filed a patent application document dated July 5 that refers to a multifunctional handheld device with a circular touch pad control, similar to the Nano’s scroll wheel.
The strongest point of the iPhone is the incredible touch-screen and the overall user experience. Everyone knows that, in terms of features, it is still far from mobile phones like the Nokia N95 . All this said, do we really need a new version of the iPhone that doesn’t include that great screen of the iPhone? GSM only? What size? Is it going to replace the iPod Nano?
Despite all the questions above, Apple’s move is clear: they want to cover that market segment that is not willing to pay $499 (and everything related to the contract with AT&T) for the iPhone.
I look forward to get all this questions answered soon.
