Truphone is a UK-based mobile VoIP operator which is gaining attention more and more during these past months, thanks to their aggressive approach to the market and their fights against main mobile operators in UK.
I’ve known Truphone late in 2004 during VON Europe in London. Their business plan was much different from what they are currently doing and their name was different too (SCN I think). I remember them since their client was the first VoIP client for Symbian I had ever seen.
The first versions of their symbian client was basically just a “wizard” to customize the integrated SIP client of the latest S60 phones in order to use Truphone servers and account.
A few days ago they just released version 3 of their client. This is a major upgrade since you can now have a contact-oriented client with presence information. More features available in the new client are the ability to send free SMS among Truphone users (like Nimbuzz does) and the ability to place calls over 3G, since only calls over Wifi were allowed before.
This takes on the last Gizmo Project client and on the Fring client, in my opinion one of the most advanced mobile IM/VoIP clients I’ve ever tried. Anyway, I’m going to try the new truphone out in the following days and I will share my thoughts with my readers.
All this said, how to use Truphone to make free calls ? It’s pretty easy. You just need to signup before Sept 30th in order to get free calls to over 40 countries from your Truphone client until Dec 31st. That means, free “Merry Christmas” to all your friends, family and colleagues worldwide. Countries covered are the following (landlines only):
Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil (Rio de Janeiro & Sao Paulo only), Canada, Chile, China (Landline and Mobile), Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Guam, Hong Kong (Landline & Mobile), Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Korea (South), Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico (Guadalajara, Mexico City & Monterrey only), Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Panama City, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Russia (Moscow Central & St Petersburg only), Singapore (Landline & Mobile), Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, US Virgin Islands, USA (Landline & Mobile)
Truphone works on the latest Nokia dual-mode phones such as E60, E61, E61i, E65, E70 E90, N80 Internet Edition and N95. You can watch these videos in order to get more information on how to make it work on your phone. To get Truphone, take a look at the instructions here.
