Share Yeigo, a new mobile VoIP player
Yesterday I received a note by Brendon Shaw who pointed me out a new mobile VoIP service from South Africa, Yeigo.

Yeigo claims to be an innovative mobile client by which you can send SMS, IMs and make cheap phone calls through you mobile’s Wifi or 3G connection. A huge number of handsets are supported, based on Symbian OS and Windows Mobile.
Like the well-known Fring, it is a “pure-VoIP” client, that is it lets you make phone calls without call-backs but using your data connection. Fring, has explained by one of their founders, uses a proprietary technology in order to save bandwidth and battery power on the client side. It would be interesting to know more about Yeigo, in order to make a better one-to-one comparison with Fring.
Instant messages are allowed towards GoogleTalk, MSN, Yahoo!, ICQ, AIM and Jabber. Unlike Fring, it doesn’t support Skype and SIP yet.

Rates are not that cheap and it is not easy to read their rates table since it’s only available in Rand, the South Africa’s currency. Calls to US, for example, are charged € 0,038, about 4.5 US cents. Yeigo-to-Yeigo calls are Free instead.
After signing up, you receive a SMS that let’s you activate your account and download Yeigo on your mobile phone (Nokia N95 for me).
The installation was seamless and after logging in, you get to the “dialer”. It basically takes the call log of your phone and show it in order to use Yeigo to call the numbers listed there. Moreover, you can access your address book easily to make calls straight from Yeigo.
Yeigo gives you R3 (about $0,43) to try their service. I’ve tried to call my office number and my own mobile phone, but unfortunately I couldn’t make it work. Display shows “dialing” but I don’t receive any call.
Moreover, I couldn’t setup my MSN account since while editing the userid, it seems that the special characters are not allowed… how to insert “@” ?
All this said, this service is still a beta (alpha?) but what I’ve seen is promising. Even if it’s still far from clients like Fring or Nimbuzz, I think that with a little more work it can become a player that will be worth a watch in this market.
