Two main Apple TV’ s weak points

Today is Friday 17th.

While in the US the “traditional” unlucky day has always been Friday 13th, in Italy (and in other countries I think) Friday 17th is that considered the unlucky day.

Well, today has been unlucky for me since I accidentally deleted a couple of videos made during my recent stay in Amsterdam. Unfortunately I haven’t had enough time to make a backup as I usually do. At this point my last chance is a data recovery tool, that I’ll try out as soon as I get back to my office.

All this said, “thanks” to this unlucky event, I discovered a few weak points of my Apple TV, that I consider severe problems.

First of all, after realizing what I did, I was happy because those videos had already been synced with my Apple TV. Ok…those videos are there, in that small box below my TV… but… how can I take them back to my MacBook ?

It seems that there is no “official” way to do that. I’ve seen that there are many 3rd party tools to take data back from iPods, but not from the Apple TV yet. I believe Apple should release a recovery tool pretty soon, since I think I’m not the only one to have this problem.

That said, I thought to “hack” my AppleTV taking the HDD out and connecting it to my MacBook to recover the lost videos. Before doing that, I wanted to make sure that not other activity was performed on my AppleTV, so I disabled the synchronization from iTunes.

DON’T DO THIS!!! If you disable the sync with the Apple TV, all data is REMOVED from your AppleTV, and you need to sync it again. What ?!?!?!? REMOVED?!? If I disable the synchronization I suppose that all data is not deleted, but simply my iTunes content is not synced until I enable it again. No, this is not true, I had to sync 35GB again (painful…) and totally lost the possibility to recover my deleted videos.

Apple, can you hear me ? I hate Friday 17th.
