Yes, I love Facebook. I started using it while thinking “Ok, I’ll use it for a couple of days then I’ll give up as I usually do with most new social networking services I try out”.
On the contrary, I’m becoming more and more addicted. Facebook is now one of the first pages I open on my browser in the morning and the last I close when I turn my MacBook off.
Facebook is much more than a social networking service. Oh yes, because Facebook is a sort of “second life” where you interact with people who belong to your first life. And it’s a great resource of people, applications, news and ways to communicate each other. It’s a place where you have to be to stay in touch with the world.
That said, I think that Facebook will be acquired sooner or later. Their astonishing numbers are surely a gold mine, a big value for… for whom ?
Ok, let’s stop for a while and think of what company would get the most from Facebook. It’s pretty clear that this analysis (mmm… let’s say “bet” rather than “analysis”) must take into account the disposable money of the buyer (Facebook is worth a couple of billions).
Here is my list of the top three potential buyers:
1) Apple
With such move, Apple would find a quick and easy way to enter 35 millions houses without selling them anything. But all those 35 millions could be easily convinced to buy an iPod, an iPhone or even a new MacBook. A bargain that would let them increase their market share against MS.
2) Microsoft
Just to prevent Apple from buying it. Like some rich soccer clubs that buy 10 stars just to prevent other clubs to buy them. A few weeks ago some rumors came out about a possible Facebook acquisition by MS, but it seems that everything faded away.
3) Google
Oh, that’s too obvious, they buy everything. With Facebook, Google would own the world. Definitely. And Facebook would become the Google Operating System. Think of a OS without anything but a browser with Facebook… Cool! Another big bargain for the big G.
So, who will buy Facebook? Leave a comment with your thoughts.
