Today was the “Apple day” and surely the new product introduced by Steve Jobs today which impressed me most and that will make me open my pocket (as usual) is the new iPod Touch.
The new iPod Touch is basically an iPhone without the phone capabilities (and more…). In comparison to the other iPods, a big step ahead in terms of UI, even if without the high capacity of the “classic” iPods (now up to 160GB!!!)
After looking at the new iPod Touch, the first device which came up to my mind is my Nokia N800. What is best to do what? It is surely the most similar device to the new iPod, but we can find many differences that, in my opinion, make the new iPod Touch the winner if you want a “media player” while the Nokia N800 is much better in terms of communication capabilities.

As you can see, the iPod Touch is a little bit smaller and much thinner and lighter. No communication tools are available (neither microphone or speaker are available) but it supports H.264, not supported by the N800.
The resolution of the N800 is much higher, but according to what I saw from the new iPod photos, the iPod seems much better in terms of UI (hey, that’s Apple!).
I noticed that even if you can surf the web, no email client is available on the iPhone touch. If you use Gmail or other web mail services, no problem, but I would have included the iPhone ‘s email client. Why not? On the other hand, the email client of the N800 is not that great, even if you may want to install 3rd party mail clients.
In addition, no bluetooth is available on the new iPod. They don’t want to risk that people might exchange songs with it?
All that said, this first quick comparison leads me to the following conclusion: the new iPod Touch seems fantastic, a must-have if you want a the last generation multimedia device also capable of web surfing, email (web) and calendar functionalities.
On the other hand, when it comes to communicate, the N800 is far better (Skype, Gizmo, video calls and so on…). And, we can’t forget that I can install 3rd party apps on the N800, a feature not available (yet?) on the iPod Touch.
My choice? Both
apple, ipod touch, luca filigheddu, n800, nokia

Actually iPod touch is very limited when it comes to media formats. So N800 is a clear winner there. Other things you forgot include for example: camera, radio tuner, java, flash, office applications, bigger screen and voip. Of which the iPod provides none..
Lelego, you make some good points. I mentioned the video call and VoIP capabilities in my post, of course. Java and Flash are must-have, but office applications are really not that good on the N800. I use it everyday and still not completely satisfied of those applications.

I was going to buy the N800 for listening to internet radio, web searching, emailing from remote/ coffee shop locations. Showing h264 clips from my portfolio to clients and of-course ” youtube “.
All the above can be done on the itouch, and with ease. Youtube plays the way it should unlike the N800. The itouch is cheaper; and stupid as it sounds, more sexy looking. If I need 16gb then 100 bucks is a no brainer too. Anyhow, just IMHO………

Great comparison!
Nice job on comparing the two products. I personally like the ipod touch because I can keep my music and videos separate from my phone. Phones have more wear and tear and I am usually upgrading my phone every few years.
hey….you can also jail break your ipod and get alot more stuff lol
I went for N800 simply because of the Linux OS, Bluetooth, VoIP, Screen resolution (800×480), etc. You can watch a DivX movie without having to shrink its resolution. Simply download, transfer to your SD card and watch. It’s too awesome!
can you use the n800 camera 4 video calls to pc’s or only to other n800s? also is there any way to watch youtube vids on n800 with smooth playback other than uktube because that requires mplayer which wont install on my n800s os2008. any info on both subjects would be great p.s does anyone know any good apps 4 os2008?
You can use Gizmo for video chat. It works to anything including to a PC. Youtube also works with the pre-installed Flash plugin. Mplayer is still a Beta version for OS2008. We need to wait until a stable version is released.
Do you want to buy some betteries which are worth the price, the website named apple m9325 battery will help you.
