It seems that another software solution for unlocking the iPhone is now available and, moreover, completely for free and Open Source.
You can check it out at the iPhone Dev Wiki. Wow! I look forward to getting comments by iPhone owners that want to try it out.

I tried this out and install the app from the dev repository. I love the list of applets they offer.
