VOIP Advisor Review

by Luca Filigheddu on September 24, 2007

DISCLOSURE - ADVERTISEMENT POST

I had forgot I signed up for Review Me a few months ago. Friday I realized this since I got a message from Review Me advising there was a pending review for my blog.

Please consider this post as an ADVERTISEMENT. I decided to make this review only because I’ve taken a look at VoIP Advisor and I liked it.

VoIP Advisor is a simple website, but offers a great guide to better understand the differences among the main VoIP Provides in the US (only “digital-POTS” services are compared).

I got impressed from the simplicity of their homepage. A table with a comparison of the offerings and the overall ratings of those VoIP services are available let visitors focus on the main subject of the website, with no frills. Only the photo of the author, that I would have liked to see linked to a brief bio or to more details (that’s a tip for the author…).

At this time, VoIP.com is their recommended VoIP service (and their affiliate) and they are offering a $25 rebate if you signup from their portal. You have to be aware that VoIP Advisor earns money from your subscriptions, of course (even if the domain is a .org, something that I don’t understand). But they offer you an updated overview to help you to make the best choice.

The “VoIP Reviews” section is nothing more than a recommendation: please avoid long reviews of VoIP services, a table with a comprehensive comparison is all you need.

If you’re here to read VOIP reviews, you should probably understand one thing. Online reviews about anything, including VOIP, are negatively biased, because users are typically more motivated to leave a review when they have a bad experience. So in my opinion, spending 20 minutes readig a bunch of VOIP reviews is not really helpful. That’s why I’m here.

In the customer’s perspective, I can’t agree more. Customers want to know if a a service is reliable and if they save money with it, they don’t care of technicalities and other amenities, they only want to know if they can trust that VoIP service or not.

The third section is a list of benefits/disadvantages that you get by switching to VoIP.

Advantages of VOIP
VOIP is cheaper than a conventional phone
You get caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding, and more for less
Digital lines increase the quality of your calls
You can take VOIP with you if you move
Free calling to US and Canada
Super cheap International rates with most plans
You can add additional lines very inexpensively
Risk free guarantee for top providers

Disadvantages of VOIP
If your Internet or power goes out, so does your phone (cell phones come in handy here!)
Smaller VOIP providers have poor service and poor quality (just use a top VOIP provider!)

Those are very basic statements, easy to understand by users. I have some doubts on the second (”Digital lines increase the quality of your calls”), but it’s not that wrong in general (it depends from the point of view).

In conclusion, VoIP Advisor is a good starting point if you are planning to switch to VoIP. I don’t know how often their comparison tables are being updated (last is August 11th), but at first sight they seem precise. Take a look and share your comments here, users can take benefit of it.
