VoIP on the Apple iPod Touch

by Luca Filigheddu on September 11, 2007

VoIP on the Apple iPod Touch

A few days ago I wrote a post comparing the new iPod Touch with the Nokia N800.

One of the main weak points of this new Apple toy against the N800 is the lack of communication tools. The N800 has Gizmo Project and Skype and thanks to the integrated web-cam, you can make video calls too.

On the contrary, the iPod touch has none of those. The question is: is the iPhone Touch capable of making VoIP calls in terms of hardware features?

People at TUAW are asking pretty much the same, since you can use VoIP on the iPhone through any web based VoIP service (at least).

Not being a phone, it’s clear that web-initiated services (like Abbeyphone or Jajah) won’t work, so the only possibility is through a software client. But, where is the microphone?

Unfortunately everyone involved in the VoIP space knows very well that it’s not only a microphone problem. There are a lot of possible issues that can come out and those cannot be that easy to solve, unless Apple decides to release a specific software update, taking for granted that the hardware is VoIP-ready.

I guess that it’s a matter of market positioning. Is the iPod Touch going to be simply an “iPod” or something like an “iPDA” ? If so, most PDAs are VoIP enabled, so it would be a must-have for Apple in order to try to enter that though market.

But, you know, Apple has the tools to do that…and much more…

I covered this as well last week. I'm amazed you came across TUAW's post before mine since mine was posted 5 days earlier and I know I'm on your RSS reader. :)

As I wrote, unfortunatekly, you can't do voice over IP on the touch, however you can get presence and IM/chat functionality.

Apple is known for skimping on the features in their products. While Creative includes FM radios and built in microphones in their MP3 players, Apple tends to ride at the top of the head on name alone. Why are we surprised that the iPhone and iPod touch are following suit?
  • Well, of course :-) I was referring to the ability to use "just" that device while you are on the go.
  • I'd say that Jajah works on the iPod touch. You just have to type in the number of the phone next to you. ;)
