I’m not speaking of riding a powerful motorcycle, but I’m referring to attending a live presentation by Guy Kawasaki.
I was so lucky to find out that Guy was giving a speech on Dec 13th at PARC, the Palo Alto Research Center.
Hey men (that’s a SF expression, right?!?), that was the best live speech I’ve ever attended. That Guy is definitely a genius. For those who don’t know who Guy Kawasaki is, that a look at his blog and at his bio. He is considered as a guru in the marketing space.
His presentation was basically the story of his recent startup, Truemors, and how he could able to build it with only $12.000.

Truemors ia basically a website where people can post “rumors” and “news” sometimes silly, sometimes strange etc. Everyone can contribute and behind the scenes there are people that enrich those news with images and so on. It was funny to hear about all the use cases that he described… One of them is easy: if you date with a girl/man, you always have something interesting to say if you check Truemors before going out for dinner ![]()
He gave a detailed explanation of any expense he had and all the numbers behind Truemors. Fortunately it is possible to find that PPT, and it’s really worth a look. But it’s not enough, since the core of the presentation is Guy itself, not the slides.
The numbers I remember better are the following: 24, the number of years that he spent in the Valley giving favors, number that led to another number, 0, that is how much he spent in marketing budget to lunch this service. In addition, it was funny to hear that his website has been declared the ugliest ever, something that gave them over 250.000 page views the day after…
In a nutshell, a great marketing lesson. The last points I would like to highlight are that he encouraged to make crazy things, that is the starting point to succeed.
What about two guys in Stanford that were thinking to create the nth search engine? What about two guys that wanted to share their videos with friends through the internet? What about selling used printers on the web? All the companies behind those crazy ideas are now the most famous and profitable over the internet.
Do crazy things, you have more possibilities to succeed.
