Cool stuff from The Crunchies

by Luca Filigheddu on January 20, 2008

[excerpt]The Crunchies has definitely been a great event, I really enjoyed it. Met old and new friends and had the opportunity to get in touch with some “Big” names of the valley, like Kevin Rose (Digg), Ewan Williams (Twitter), Gabe Rivera (TechMeme) and many many others.

I wanted to share with you some moments that are really worthy.[/excerpt]

Lot of laughs
There have been lot of funny episodes during the event. Two of them are memorable: fake Steve Jobs in a video thanking everyone for the award received for the best gadget of 2007 (the iPhone). Here is the video, really funny:

The second is the live performance of the authors of the popular video “Here is another bubble” that have been really appreciated by the audience and the content of the two songs they presented was really lot of fun :-)

The winners?
Twentyone winners, but only two got two awards: Facebook and Wordpress, “best overall” and “best startup founder” for the former and “most likely to succeed” and “best startup CEO” for the latter. Great job guys, they surely did something disrtuptive. Good luck.

Special Mention
I would like to reserve my special mention to SmugMug and StumbleUpon.

I had the opportunity to talk to the founders of both companies during the party, and can say they really deserve a special mention. SmugMug is quickly becoming a star in the digital photography landscape with their great service for amateur and professional photographers and StumbleUpon is a service that I really love and that has been able to properly use the viral marketing in order to get important results.

Most embarrassing fact
I had the fortune to be in the right place at the right time so that I could see with my eyes a very embarrassed guy while was trying to record a video on behalf of Sarah Meyers of PopSnap (former broadcaster and live streamer at Justine.TV as well as Mogulus). The story is the following: suddenly, don’t ask me why (it seems he opened a blog and wants to launch a startup), the popular rapper MC Hammer appeared and was enjoying the party together with all of us. Immediately Sarah wanted to take the opportunity to record an interview, so asked a not lucky guy to record the video for her. The rapper was happy to give the interview but… at the end Sarah realized that guy was pressing the wrong button and they had to do it again. Luckily MC Hammer was so kind to repeat his interview, otherwise I could see the head of that guy jumping from the balcony… BTW, who was that guy Sarah?

A gift
For the guys of GrandCentral that spent with me some time commenting the event. You deserve it:

I was lucky and proud to shoot that video of Sarah and MC Hammer. I talked with him for a bit beforehand, and he is a great guy, so I wasn't embarrassed for having to re-shoot.
