Adobe on Apple Aperture

by Luca Filigheddu on April 2, 2008

Many blogs are reporting today that Adobe just released the new beta version of Lightroom 2, the popular workflow and digital photography tool for Windows and Mac.

I just want to point out that  I was surprised to read an explicit reference to Apple Aperture in their FAQ, that is:

When will Lightroom 2.0 be available?
Adobe does not preannounce products. However, the team is working on the next version and we’ll be sure to keep you updated. One thing we can say, however, is that we plan to continue with a more aggressive release schedule than we’ve seen from Apple, which took over two years between release of Aperture 1.0 and 2.0. This is still a new product category, and we believe it’s important to respond quickly to evolving customer needs.

In a nutshell: hey, we know our job and we do it better than Apple, so please choose Lightroom.

That’s one of the reasons I chose Lightroom over Aperture, more “life” behind the scenes than that I perceived about Aperture. And, in addition, definitely more fast on my MacBook.

If you still have to choose, take a look at my previous post on this subject here.

Luca, there is a huuuge difference in a speed between Aperture 2.x and 1.x. Have you tried Aperture 2.x? There is a demo available at http://www.apple.com/aperture/trial/
  • Really? I'll check it out, thank you.

Things have sped up considerably with Aperture:

    Feb 12th - Aperture 2.0
    Mar 3rd - Aperture 2.0.1
Mar 20th - Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.0
Mar 26th - Security Update 2008-002 v1.1 (Leopard) (included bugfixes for printing problems in Aperture)
    Mar 28th - Aperture 2.1

That averages almost an update a week
  • @kevin I agree, but it's pretty normal after a new release... the problem is from now on...

Luca, it's quite foolish, IMO, to choose any software developed by anyone based on what they MIGHT do in the future. It makes far more sense to look at what is available NOW and see if it meets your needs. If it does, purchase it and use it. If it doesn't, get something else.

I admire that Adobe CLAIMS they will be producing versions and upgrades to Lightroom more quickly than they believe Apple will do for Aperture. However, will they? Are they going to fix problems or provide functionality you need in that next version? Microsoft is famous for promising the world for their software and then not providing key promised features. Adobe claims they will act quickly, but look what they did with Premier.

Getting an application now because of what they might do in the future is like buying a gas-guzzling SUV now because ten years from now there might be a hybrid version. It just doesn't make sense.
  • I said it's ONE OF THE REASONS. It's clear that you make your choice according to what you need and what can REALLY offer you all the features you are looking for.

In addition, there are also other components like speed and so on. Both apps are fantastic, I've been using Aperture for a while and what led me to switch to Lightroom is described here: http://www.lucafiligheddu.com/2007/12/aperture-...

I will give Aperture another try, but I am not willing to move from one to another continuously :-) In addition, I found great LR manuals from professional photographers, something more difficult to find (the good ones) for Aperture.
  • Yes, everyone is aware of the speed issues with Aperture 1.x. Aperture 2.x is a much different (i.e. better) product. Lightroom was certainly off to a better start, but they're currently behind Aperture at the moment. Aperture 2.1's new plug-in architecture makes the product even more compelling as it reduces the need to go to Photoshop. Adobe seems to be afraid of cannibalizing it's own product line with this regard.

Anyway, there are compelling reasons to use either product. I just wouldn't base my decision on perceived future updates, etc. One could easily take Adobe to task and ask them how long version 2 will be in beta. Version 1 was in beta seemingly forever. Clearly Aperture 2's release is forcing a response from Adobe. It should be clear which vendor is scrambling to catch up at this point.

Yea just ask where are the universal versions of acrobat reader, flash, shockwave, etc... are???

THey have been able to make universal binaries for atleast 2 years now and these products should have been one of the first and you would the most simplest to port.

Shockwave 11 just got released Universally, the other day.....hopefully the others are close to release as well!!
