iPhone: Not For Business Yet

by Luca Filigheddu on April 8, 2008

Today, off for meetings in Milan, was the first day I had the chance to test the iPhone I bought during my last trip in US.

While writing and reading emails was a unique experience, much better than my N95 and much better than a Blackberry, there are many little issues than prevented me from doing actions I usually do with my Nokia N95 seamlessly.

1) No way to send links from Safari by email

2) No cut and paste available, so I couldn’t paste links either

3) No way to save an image from Safari in order to send it by email or manipulate it on the phone

4) No way to send a business card through bluetooth

5) No way to flag an email on the IMAP client

Is it completely slave of iTunes? Why did Apple choose to prevent users to use their iPhone as a device for “sharing” stuff? A deep usage for business purposes is still impossible, even the mail experience is, I repeat, really stunning.

Example: let’s say you find a great white paper while browsing and you want to send the link to your colleague (it’s a fake, just for this example):

UPDATE: Stuart points out that it is possible: just click on the “+” on the browser and also the option to send a link will pop up.

How long does it take to send it with the iPhone? Bad.

Overall, despite it’s the device most close to a laptop I’ve ever used, there is still some serious work to be done. The points above make me really look forward to the iPhone 2.0, because with just little improvements, this is the candidate to become the killer multipurpose internet-connected communication device for the following years.

For the records, after an entire day out of office with the iPhone being the only device I had for emails, browsing and calls, battery dropped to 25%, not bad but neither that great, since just a few calls more and I would have needed to recharge it (even if the N95 is much worse in terms of battery).

I totally agree with you Luca. I did play with the iPhone I brought back to my wife from US too and got the same feeling…
Maybe if we get this http://www.apple.com/iphone/enterprise/ we could change our minds..
Anyway, next trip I’ll by a second one to play with this enterprise beta version

Luca,
To send a safari page link just click the bookmark + and then send the link using the mail client.

To send a screen shot or a picture (I presume you have a jailbroken iPhone) go to the installer app and then download and install the “Capture” app. It will save any screen shot to your photos on the iphone. You can send by mail from there.

4 and 5 I agree with. 1, 2, 3. It’s already partially there.

Stuart,
I completely missed the “send link” option. Thanks for the tip. I think that also #2 is not possible, unless you found a way to do that too.

I’m agree with you Luca: iPhone isn’t a business solution. But you can find Copy/Paste in Safari browser with a simple bookmarklet: http://www.biocow.com/iCopy/
I know it’s not so comfortable, but I can’t wait official update :)

iCopy seems interesting. Thanks for the tip. My wife is actually using the iPhone everyday (for calls only…), so I haven’t had much time to browse forums and mailing lists to find tips like those. Thanks.

Writing on an iPhone a better experience than on a BlackBerry? 8-0
That’s pretty bold and very little realistic! ;-)
