Apple iPhone vs Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

Apple iPhone vs Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

UPDATE: if you are reading this, you cannot miss the iPhone vs BlackBerry Bold comparison. Check it out!

Aside from my wedding anniversay (4th), yesterday was the Nokia “iPhone-killer” day. Nokia just announced in London the new and much awaited Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, the first Nokia phone provided with a touchscreen display.

Been labeled as 5800, it means that it’s a mass market phone and the price has been defined accordingly, that is $390 (in Europe should be around euros 290), unlocked. For a complete set of features, take a look at the official Nokia 5800 website, full of animations, videos and complete specifications.

It’s pretty clear that everyone is looking at it as the iPhone’s rival, even if I expect that all the next high-end Nokia phones will be touchscreen and much more feature-rich. This means that this comparison is, to me, a bit like apples and pears and it doesn’t make much sense, but in any case it ’s something people are looking for.

Who is gonna be the winner? Here are my opinions, broken down in 10 categories.

1) Display

Nokia 1 – Apple 1

The new Nokia phone is provided with a 3.2″, 16:9 – 640×360 nHD display with up to 16M colors. An accelerometer is included, so that the screen automatically rotates depending on the orientation of the phone.

The iPhone’s screen is a little bit bigger (3.5″) but the resolution is less, being 480×320. Not having tried the 5800 yet, I cannot tell you more, but I would say I would prefer a better resolution over a not much bigger screen.

2) Size

Nokia 1 – Apple 0

The iPhone is bigger, on average (a little bit longer 115mm vs 111mm,  thinner 12.3mm vs 15.5mm and larger), that means the Nokia is about 25g lighter. Not a big deal, both of them are portable and designed to fit well in your hands. Having a smaller width, the Nokia should be easier to operate with one hand only.

3) Memory

Nokia 1 – Apple 0

While the iPhone comes in two versions, 8GB and 16GB internal memory, the Nokia is offered with 8GB only through a micro SD card. The latter is definitely a more flexible solution since it’s very easy and relatively cheap upgrading to 16GB, something iPhone’s owners cannot do.

4) Network

Nokia 0 – Apple 0

Both phones are provided with a complete range of available voice and data networks, both GSM and 3G, and both phones come in two different versions for 3G (850/1900MHz and 900/2100 Mhz).

5) Input methods

Nokia 1 – Apple 1

Your finger for the iphone, finger, stylus or plectrum for the Nokia. Even if I prefer my finger for both, many will definitely like having more available options. Here  it’s only a metter of personal tastes. Unlike the iPhone, Nokia provides you with a traditional stylus – handwriting, much common to Windows mobile and Palm users.

6) Battery life

Nokia 1 – Apple 0

Daily usage with each of these phones is a different thing, of course, but according to the technical specifications, the Nokia 5800 is overall better either for voice, data and standby (about 15 to 30% more). In addition, Nokia claims up to 35h of music time against 24h of the Apple iPhone.

7) Camera

Nokia 1 – Apple 0

The Nokia is provided with a 3.2Mpix camera with Carl Zeiss Optics and dual flash. On the contrary, the iPhone mounts a very basic 2Mpix camera, no flash, no carl zeiss, far behind the Nokia’s one despite it is certainly not the top as the one mounted in the N95.

8) Video Recording

Nokia 1 – Apple 0

No native iPhone video recording yet, even if the iPhone is capable of playing various video formats. Services lik Qik works on jailbroken iPhones while it is pre installed in any Nokia 5800 phone. In addition you can record videos with the standard Nokia application and make video calls, something not yet possible on the iphone.

9) UI

Nokia 1 – Apple 1

Hard fight here. The iPhone UI is definitely cool and any customer loves it. The Nokia’s one is promising, with the new contact and  multimedia bar (familiar to N-series owners) but not having tried it yet, I cannot say more. What I bet is that Nokia’s interface will be much better in terms of basic features still missing on the iPhone, like the much requested cut & paste or a much better bluetooth integration, with the ability to send all kind of multimedia files trough bluetooth. I would say it’s a draw at this moment.

10) Music

Nokia 1 – Apple 1

To me, another draw here. Nokia is pushing this phone as a music phone tightly integrated with their new online music store. In addition, any XpressMusic phone will come with one year subscription which lets you download unlimited songs (with DRM). The winner? iTunes is certainly a big one to fight but Nokia is the #1 in the mobile phone market, that means a preferred way to push their services to customers and, with that package, easier to make them prefer their store over iTunes.

Being a long time user of Nokia phones and having access to an iPhone (kinda, my wife’s owns it) I’m not surprised by this result. There is much more to say, like audio quality during phone calls (I bet Nokia will be far superior), GPS as well as the internet browsing experience, I bet much better on the iPhone.

Anyway, right now it looks like the Nokia 5800 is a potential winner, more likely to become a mass market phone rather than the iPhone, the latter being much more expensive and not available without a contract in certain markets like the US. In any case, it’s more a metter of how you are going to use it most.

What do you think? How much market share will Nokia get against the iPhone? Please leave your comments doen here.

  • ur-a-homo
clearly ur biased because the iphone will have better ui and definetely a better music player
  • hoyohoyo
no, Nokia has RealPlayer and built-it audio chip.
  • ashish
Have you crosschecked all features ? I mean what about FM player and Bluetooth ? They are not available on iPhone. Though I dont think the nokia will be giving camera better than 1MP in economy range (nokia claims 3 MP camera for nokia 3600 slide priced in economy range is worse than a 1 MP nokia product which is priced high.)
  • macclicker
And what about the applications in jar and symbian, I have a lot in my N95, voice recorder, advanced call managers, dictionaries, lights, divx player, djmixer,irRemote, a lot of alarms and clocks. I have and ipod touch and it is great the touch screen but now I am waiting to have the 5800 and sell the N95 8gb.
  • Jibran
Nokia wins hands down. Even if all the features of both the phones come out to be equal... Nokia still wins at price. And Nokia's sales strategy. I wanted to get an iphone before i knew about 5800 but i didnt buy the iphone cuz it was only available with a contract.
So I'm gonna say F-OFF to iphone and I'm gonna sleep with my 5800 as soon as it hits the shelves!
  • sam
go to hell man u don't know wht is iPhone...dats y u say like dis..frm ur words al of us can understand the frustration for couldn't use the iphone...
  • lalalie
I wouldn't even use it if u give it to me for free..
oh wait, i would sell it to cool wannabes...

"oh im so cool i have an iphone....."
  • Bren
Nokia 5800 seems very competetive compared to the iPhone. I still love Apple but it looks like Nokia is better in features with this phone. Does anybody know when it's gonna be released in asia? And how much? Thanks :)
  • Arashiodori
    RE: ur-a-homo

I guess you're the apple fanboy instead.

I had the chance to test both, and I have to say that the audio quality of 5800 has an distinct edge over iPhone's.

Anyway, Comes with Music, although it has a certain type of DRM, it isn't as pervasive as iTunes.

Which is of course, another thing Nokia has done far better than Apple.
  • @arashidori I'm actually an Apple fanboy, but I have always owned Nokia phones. I haven't tried the Nokia yet, but in terms of voice quality, I can bet Nokia is better, as you confirm. Let's look at the market share in 1 year time, the market is the only judge.
  • one
nokia wins..hoho..iphone is way too pricy..
  • dk
Not a bad comparison, just don't think nokia will be able to match Apple's hype machine--at least in the US. In 18 months and with only two models Apple is already nipping at Nokia's heels in the U.S. with 5.7% of the total cell phone market. The iPod was/is not the music player with the best/most features, but it still dominates the market. I think in the US it will come down to RIMM and APPLE for smartphones. In Europe and Asia, the iPhone is unlikely to dominate unless Apple drops the carriers and sells unlocked versions.
  • I don't think so, but I'm more and more convinced iPhone is a consumer thing which businesses will never embrace. In the US in particular, RIM will be the winner.
  • Sujee
For sure Nokia has the better phone but how much of the cell phone market will they take back from apple, only time will tell. I have many friends who have the new iphone 3G and a couple who have the original iphone and to be honest, they like the phone but they have quite a few complaints. The reason why people have flocked to the iphone is no ones really come out with an actual competitor. But now finally the big shots have come up with some good competitors such as the sony experia, blackberry storm and Nokia 5800. I think due to all the competition, the iphone will lose some of it's market unless apple finally realizes that they shouldn't hold back on features so that when they come out with iphone 4G with cut and paste.
  • ghenghis
iphone sucks..... worst phone ever... pathetic battery life.... pathetic gps...

5800 is awesome and blackberry storm looks promising... apple is for school going teenagers !!

worldwide apple has 0.4% marketshare compared to 40% for Nokia! Lets not even argue who makes better phones!
  • can't agree more :-)
  • jitheshkmenon
this is really rubbish,i hav an iPhone..if u hav to understand the facilities of iphone, first of al u hav to use that..never to create a competable mobile against iPhone...nokia 5800 go to hell...iPhone is the best..
  • lalalie
haha u've spent so much money on the iphone so u stand by iphone... hahaha......
  • Randomking
Will you please... PLEASE stop being an illiterate troll? You've posted 2 completely uneducated and almost entirely gibberish comments.

The Iphone was revolutionary. But it was also a longshot that other companies had avoided. Noone was sure if an mp3 playing camera phone that can browse the internet would be desirable given it's high cost, but it turned out it was. As such, it was only a matter of time until competition arose, and Nokia has. Iphone is extremely limited in expansion, features, and services and far too expensive. It drew in the consumer market as the first of its kind, but it does not have abilities desired by the corporate world and it now has competition on the market by Nokia and Palm, with others to follow.

I'm sorry to burst your little mac-loving bubble, but the iphone is not the best of it's kind anymore. It's smooth running and pretty, but I can't justify buying it as well as I can the Nokia 5800. The iphone will soon be overshadowed.
  • kyle
The main point you have to see tho is that the iphone is apples first phone nokia have been doing this for years i work for a nokia repair company but ive got an iphone. i find its much better all round. looks better feels better in your hands. the camera is only a 2mp but i find it is better quality then most cameras on phones out atm. iPhone wins everyitme for me
  • Have you tried the Nokia?
  • lalalie
Let me try to use my Nokia to send something to you via Bluetooth.. call me when u're ready...
  • Ravi
thats a good comparison , i am waiting to get my hands on nokia.
  • Nokia is going to release 5800 in my country within last week of January. I will sure buy a Nokia 5800. I am waiting for a new mobile.
  • wws20
I have Iphone 3g and now This Nokia 5800 ExpressMusic.
    Frankly Speak.
As I am an Apple Fans, I have to admit that Nokia has do the best.
From the experience of using HTC ,Apple now Nokia.
This baby is surf the point for easy usage and I first use it for hours and being fall in love.
The organize menu in to the category is easy to easy and yet my 70 yrs old Grandmum can first use it without problem as I let her try both. She still prefer the Nokia over the Iphone.
She told me that , Iphone is very fancy and she simply not very a clues what the icon is .
  • Don
Stuck with how to make start video call - no clue in manual nor online help inside phone... any short cut or this phone is way too much complicated for me?
  • :-) it's usually an option of the standard call... just dial the phone number and try to open the options.... there you'll find the video call option... this works on any Nokia, at least
  • Allen
i dont get it why are you guys even arguing about this??. The iphone has no features, you cant do anything with the iphone except, listen to music and make phone call, lol, Nokia has been making phones for a long long time, they know what they are doing, i have owned alot of cell phones, practically i change phones every month, i have the iphone 2G and the 3G, both of them are crap, for people who said the iphone was the first touch screen phone, please if you dont know anything, please DO NOT make a coment about it. who said the iphone doesnt crash? or freez? i lost my contacts 3 times because it crashed, and no i didnot jail break it. the browser for the internet depends on how fast you network provider works. On iphone 2G there is no GPS people wake up. i like the iphone for its ipod ft. but i think nokia's music quality is as good, there are alot of problems with the iphone, i know so many people who have bought iphones and they regret it. Apple has to wrok much harder for it now, because most of the people have tried it and they dont think it is good. touch screen has been around for a long time, Nokia 7700-7710 / HP Ipaq phone, O2, HTC. palm, and etc. i own all three, and i have to say it, nokia wins, if you have any problem with your nokia, the software upgrade will fix it.
  • KURNI
i have hands on exp on both i phone and nokia 5800.which one is better .,well i cudnt make out.iphone is, yeah, for teenagers..,who just are amused by user unfriendly iphone..,they really wanna distinguish themselves from others sayin "hey i got to..aaa...found out ..hurray made out ..how to use an iphone".well 5800 is not a complete winner over iphone either.response time ..,ui.,styling .. iphone certainly has an edge over 5800.as someone mentioned expandable or switchable memory in 5800 is something that puts iphone to shame.i mean..,we shud encourage things which are comfy for us..,things which really give us options to chose from and not just stick or bound to nonsensical concept ...getting carried away by the brand name just because so called cool people have done it that way, right.finally the two main things ..looks n the price.iphone feels a lot stylish in ur palm than 5800 which has a plastic ,bulky feel.regarding price..whoa whoa whoa...IN THE FACE COMPETITION APPLE SHUD SOON COME UP WITH SOMETHING LIKE "BUY ONE GET ONE FREE".
  • Hayl
I just got the 5800 today and im still leaning more towards my iphone, i cant part so am keeping them both till i decide,
I definitely love itunes and the fact i can zoom into a specific area on a photo just gliding my finger.
The nokia is very light in comparison to the iphone and has really good options for which way you would like to txt.
The camera is not very good at all maybe im doing something wrong but it was quite fuzzy but it's a close call, i don't think i will be able to part with my iphone, but if i do im going to get a ipod because i cant live withot itunes lol.
  • std1024
i loved the way the differences are showed
i guess i know what i want ...............suerly nokia 5800 rocks
the touch screen is not so sensitive compared to iphones multi touch
BUT OVERALL NOKIA 5800 IS A DELIGHTFULLY THING TO HAVE IN D POCKET AND GUESS WHAT IT DOESN'T EVEN BURN A HOLE IN UR PANTS LIKE THE STUPID IPHONE DOES
JUST BECAUSE OF THE ITS GETTING ALL THE HYPE IN THE PRICE but it ain't gonnna change anything iphone sucks and it sucks big time fcuk u apple
  • Paul
And Lets not forget...nokia sends MMS messages.....iphone dont!
  • I am currently using i phone 16GB, but I guess I'm going to switch it with 5800, I want more memory and less 'sexy' symbol attach to my phone
  • ayub
by reading the wonderful comparison of both the phones i see that 5800 is much better because it is much durable and advance than i phone i'll go for 5800
  • Just what I expected, Nokia 5800 wins!
  • khalid malik

I have just bought the 5800 as cheaper and seems a whole lot better in most aspects. my ipod is broke anyway...one of the common errors where the 3.5mm headphone socket buggers up. only one head phone works!! apple are just riddled with bugs and errors. So am waiting for the 5800 to be delivered as will take longer than usual due to being in higher demand!!! I can now use that as my ipod and the years free music!! cant wait!!! i will miss itunes though :(
  • Sue
Thank you so much for this review.

I was contemplating at first, whether to get an iPhone or something else since it's about time to have a 3G phone.

It becomes a hype here to own an iPhone, since it'll be officially launch here in Malaysia next week, and I was thinking, "should I join the crowd or just follow my own path".

Yeah, I admit that it is much more "cooler" to own an iPhone, but after reading your review, practically, Nokia 5800 is the best choice. Besides, it is much more cheaper!

I can save my money for an Hermes handbag or at least an LV handbag or maybe some other designer's handbag. That will make me be in the crowd as well.. Ha! Ha!

I'll definitely will be getting that Nokia 5800. No more second thought.

    Thanks again!

Thank you for all the comments
One of the main things people seem to prefer iphone for is itunes
One big advantage in the nokia is they have been making phones for yrs and know what the customers want
Another advantage of Nokia is you can use different networks on contract and no unlocking
I have just ordered my Nokia today on Orange ONE THOUSAND free minutes UNLIMITED text messages and UNLIMITED browsing and all for TWENTY FIVE quid
Iphone was only SIX hundred minutes and would of been FORTY quid for the sixteen gig

Adnan: You like the Iphone "I think" where others cant understand it well you must be suited to it because I struggled to understand comments as they were half in text speak >>>> d music d did d dat d uvver Jeez people cant write normal anymore

Excuse my lack of punctuation and numerics as my shift key is sticking

i have a nokia 5800 and since i have had it i have loved it!!!. • Unknown
HOLY - I THINK I JUST FELL IN LOVE WITH 5800
BUT STILL, IPHONE IS MUCH MUCH COOLER THAN 5800 BUT MUCHMUCH LESSER FEATURES

    AND NOKIA5800EXPRESS MUSIC WINS!!!
  • Mishal
i was looking forward ti it too. But the touch screen is not as responsive as iphone's. I am not saying that 5800 is bad but iphone is better as far as touch screen is concerned. Nokia gives wide range of applictaion compatibiity. Thats why i dont like iphone. Otherwise iphone has a great look. And whats the deal with no data transfer via bluethooth. Its beyond me......... I switched to n82. Awesome phone
