Facebook, Privacy and Communication: Fail!

Today I came across the very (very!) popular italian satiric news “Striscia la Notizia“, where the presenters usually investigate, in a humorous way, about strange (but serious) facts happening around italians.

They interviewed a couple of popular italian TV stars who asked for their help because they were concerned about the sudden appearance of their “fake” identities on Facebook. All of them explained that many of their friends added those fake identies on Facebook and were sending them messages, even private sometimes.

That said, one of their guys went to the European Facebook headquarter in London and after explaining the problem, they refused to let them meet someone who could discuss the problem with them. The final comment? The most popular communication platform worldwide failed to succeed in communicating properly!

I don’t think this kind of problems will ever reach Facebook’s HQ in Palo Alto and probably the guys at the reception desk in London didn’t really get the problem, in any case I look forward to hearing the official position of Facebook about fake identities since they are really potentially a huge problem.

What if people start creating fake identities of “normal” people? What if I create a fake identity of a person I know very well and whose I know it’s not on Facebook yet? Forget privacy, in my opinion it’s time for Facebook to think of this problem seriously an take the proper countermeasures soon.

  • This is certainly not something that Facebook wishes to have as part of the experience. For any social network this is a challenging issue. To me the key element of Facebook is authenticity. It is about relationships that are real. If you are part of, or close to, a person's social graph you know what is real. If you are a public figure, your personna does not have the same authenticity that is "verifiable" because the public at large has no relationship to measure the authenticity.

A similar dilemma for Facebook has arisen about limits on the number of "friends." For what I am calling "public figures" a limit does not fit, and Facebook has provided fan pages as the solution. At some level a profile's authenticity could be verified by "real friends" as authentic. Maybe at some number of friends this could be mandatory-- but how do we know the friends are real? Identifying fakes may be easier. Real friends would be the best to expose fake identities. I think we are just going to have to watch how this evolves.
