Today I discovered a great WordPress plugin called Insights. At first sight, it looks like quite similar to Zemanta, even if it provides some interesting and useful features Zemanta doesn’t.

Insights basically adds a box in your WordPress editor with a search engine interface. You can then use it to look for content according to specific keywords and quickly add it to your blog. Do you need to quickly get to another your prior blog post where you wrote about a certain subject? Just insert it in the Insights’ box and you’ll immediately get a set of results, through an easy-to-use Ajax interface, that you can easily insert inside your blog post.

For example, I now want to get all the posts in my blog where I wrote about WP plugins. Here is the result:

I can immediately link to a specific result, for example the one where I wrote about Zemanta.

While the search for links is really powerful, I noticed that Image search is way less accurate than Zemanta. I now wanted to get an image of the WordPress logo but cannot get it through Insights (while I could easily obtain it through Zemanta).

On the other hand, I really like the ability to search Videos as well as Google Maps.  Here is the map of the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco, quickly obtained by searching for “Golden Gate Bridge San Francisco” on the search box for Google Maps through Insights.

Or, here is a video of the bridge seen by an airplane.

Are Zemanta and Insights alternatives? One of the main differences is that Zemanta analyzes the content of your post as soon as you type, while Insights needs you to insert a specific search string. I don’t think they can be considered alternatives, since there are different missing/available features in both of them. At this stage, I recommend to have them both installed, they can definitely help you to make every blog post even richer. BTW, it works fine with the just released WordPress 2.7.

Thanks Luca for this great comparison. I just wanted to add that in Zemanta you can use "filter" function to manually find recommendations for given keyword.

  • Hey, the manual filter option works fine, thanks!
  • Jure, thanks for stopping by. I'll check it out.
  • Thanks for the tip. I know others have similar type of plug ins or services but usually it comes inside a monthly membership site.. this usually can help break through writers block.
