Why Technorati Doesn’t Make Sense Anymore For Me

I used to be a big fan of Technorati. Some time ago, when my blog was still at http://lucafiligheddu.blogspot.com, I used to check it regularly to see what blogs were linking to my posts and how popular my blog was becoming. It was also useful to keep track of the discussions going on around my posts and to eventually get back to other bloggers who quoted me.

The story completely changed as soon as I changed my blog’s domain to http://www.lucafiligheddu.com. First of all, it was impossible to tell Technorati “Hey, I’m here, nothing changed, just the domain!”. So I had to build my “authority” again from scratch, loosing a fair “220” authority rank and being among the 20.000 top blogs. Moreover, it looks like Technorati didn’t update their engine in order to keep track of links to a blog post coming from a source different from a blog. So, if my blog is linked from a Twitter post, it seems that Technorati ignores that link.

Many marketers and bloggers are more and more using microblogging (e.g. Twitter) in place of blogging in order to share a link/story very quickly, without having to write a blog post for it (I pointed out this is becoming my behavior as well). Furthermore, “url shorteners” like TinyUrl.com don’t help since it is difficult to get back to the original link source.

Today, Technorati is no more a place that I check since there is much missing information which prevents me from having a clear overview of what’s happening around my blog. For the sake of honesty, I have to say Technorati is also changing their model as well, becoming more and more a news aggregator rather than an effective way to get an idea of the authority of a blog. At first sight, according to the graph above, many users agree with me, though.

  • Great post Luca. It proves to me that leadership in the world of the web is fleeting, even for giants like Technorati. But, clearly it opens up an opportunity for a newer ranking company to fill the void. Postrank (AideRSS) looks at individual posts - perhaps they should add more Technorati type features?
  • It's true, changing your URL space does a reset on your authority. Here's the irony: I work at Technorati and have this as an issue because when I upgraded my CMS, my URL space changed; all of my recent links go uncounted towards authority. This is something we expect to work on but in the grand scheme, it's kind of an edge case; the vast majority of the blogs out there have stable URL spaces. Twitter is a different phenomenon but if you have other ideas about how Technorati can help you and your readers, please me know.
    thanks,
