Share Why The New VON Is Not Attractive For Me
Today I received an email from Virgo Publishing, the company which acquired the assets of VON, the popular conference focused on IP Communications founded by Jeff Pulver at the end of the 90′s.
As most of my readers should know, VON shut down in April this year for many different reasons I don’t want to repeat now. While Jeff Pulver is “restarting and rebooting” himself with many new initiatives like the just announced event SocComm taking place in New York in February, Virgo Publishing is trying to relaunch VON with the first event scheduled for September 2009 in Miami. They are also releasing a printed issue of VON starting from March 2009.
Why is this VON, Voice of Network Convergence, definitely not attractive for me? First and foremost, for me VON is Jeff Pulver. Without Jeff, VON is not VON. It’s just yet another conference and expo, like many other micro-events taking place worldwide every month. Nothing special to me. Moreover, I bet it will be somehow overlapping with ITExpo, definitely a more interesting event for me and with many former VON stars who are now running it (like Carl Ford with a 4G-focused conference).
Last but not least, with the rise of conferences like eComm by Lee Dryburgh, a place where innovators meet to shape the future of emerging communications, I don’t think companies are willing to spend more money for another “editors-driven” event rather than an “innovators-driven” event, like VON has been for years now.
What do you think? Is there space for the brand new fake-VON?
