I’ve been reading a lot of interesting thoughtful posts by pals VoIP bloggers like Alec Saunders, Ken Camp, Ted Wallingford, Phoneboy, Garrett Smith, Jeff Pulver, Andy Abramson, Jon Arnold and a few others in regards of whether VoIP is dead or not.
Alec well summarizes the main comments/views shared by the bloggers above in this post.
Honestly I still haven’t had time to join the discussion but now that my sons sleep (I took a few days off during these holidays, mainly spent at home with the kids, that means NO time available) I just wanted to add my two cents, having been involved in VoIP for almost the last ten years.
In my opinion, 2009 will be the year when the equation “VoIP = Cheap Calls” will start to die. Or, at least, the brave companies which will try to build their business models on that are not going that far. The key, as I stated many times in other posts in this blog, is focusing on applications, on solving real problems. Do people really care whether there is VoIP behind the scenes or not?
Calliflower, Mobivox, my company’s Sitofono, Phweet, Dial2Do and so on (just to name some), are all great applications which solve a specific problem in specific contexts. Do you think anyone using those applications care about … what was the name?!? VoIP ?!?
That said, everyone can easily agree that VoIP is now mainstream and it’s just a which companies use to build useful applications for the market. The question, to me, is not “Is VoIP Dead” but “Is the Low Cost VoIP-based telephony” going to die very soon?
See you in 2010 to check what happened during 2009
