Announcing Tweefind, A Rank-Based Twitter Search Engine

Today I’m happy to announce Tweefind, the first twitter search engine based on users’ “rank” (called the Tweerank).

Mashable already broke the news today:

The traditional Twitter search is a realtime search which shows the last tweets containing certain keywords first, ordered by time. This is very useful, but sometimes users just want to search Twitter to find other kind of information not strictly related to the time when those have been published.  In this latter case, the higher the rank of a Twitter user is, the more interesting (read “relevant”) his/her tweets could potentially be.

How is the Tweerank calculated? Behind the scenes there is a sophisticated algorithm which analyzes how users use Twitter and calculates their rank accordingly. The rank is obtained taking into account a certain number of different parameters in a certain timeframe:

  • # followers
  • # following
  • # of tweets
  • # of RT he/she receives
  • # of replies
  • # of distinct users who reply
  • # of distinct users who retweet
  • # of RT he/she makes
  • # of links the user shares
  • much more…

Users’ rank can change daily. The more he/she uses Twitter, the more their ranks are stable over time. If, for example, a certain user doesn’t use Twitter for a week, the rank associated to that user drops a bit etc. The engine which calculates the tweerank works 24h/day and the more Twitter users analyzes, the more accurate will be. Now the main engine has been working in production for 72 hours only, so in one week time it will be even more accurate.

Right now, ranks are show as colored dots and for simplicity the same set of dots could represent different ranks. Despite this, if a tweet is shown before another one where the user’s rank is represented with the same set of dots, it means the rank is higher.

I really look forward to comments and suggestions, please use getsatisfaction.com/tweefind to leave your tips and bugs reports. Or leave a comment to this post, if you prefer.

Tweefind is just the first of a series of value added Twitter services that a division of my company is going to release in the following weeks. Stay tuned ;-)
