Share How To Boost The Conversion Rate On Twitter

Twitter is becoming more a more the best marketing tool/service I’ve ever used so far. I think I’m just the nth person stating this, but as long as you use it and become a power user, you’ll realize this is definitely the truth.

During the past two months using it intensely, I started monitoring the performances I get from it in terms of conversion rates related to the links I post to Twitter.

In general, I can say that the average conversion rate for a “normal” link you post on Twitter is 1%. This means that if you post that link once and it doesn’t get re-tweeted, roughly 1% of your followers will click on it.

The point is that a tweet is something “volatile” that people see for just a tiny amount of time (usually) and not all your followers will come across it, in particular if their geographic location is spread over all the time zones.

That being said, if you want to increase the conversion rate above, you have to send multiple instances of the same tweet during the day. I use to send the same Tweet three or four times, it is usually enough. This usually boosts the conversion to 3-4%. In my case, having about 1300 followers, that link would get about 30 to 45 clicks. You can try even 5 or 6, should be fine, but the risk is to bother people who already saw it.

The story changes if that link points to a story which is particularly hot or interesting. In that case some of your followers (or followers of your followers) will re-tweet it, giving the conversion rate a huge boost. An example? Yesterday I tweeted about the first available builds of Google Chrome for Mac. I posted that link 4 times in the past 24 hours, it’s been re-tweeted 12 times and it got 214 clicks so far, that is roughly 16.5% if compared to my followers (doesn’t make sense in this case, but just to use the same metric).

Actually, I bet it would have been higher, hitting 20%, but two of the re-tweets didn’t contain my original link, so some clicks have been lost.

These are just some examples to demonstrate how powerful Twitter could be to share stories, links or promote your products and services. Think of what would have happened if I have had 15.000 followers or more. Who did say that followers are not important?

If you want to make your own experiments, make sure to use an URL shotener which lets you track the number of clicks. I’m using tr.im right now and and I definitely recommend it.

I disagree. I tend to unfollow people that repeat the same information over and over.

How do you know if someone clicked on a link in a tweet? I have sitemeter and it never identifies anything like that.
