Why Tweetie For Mac Is Not For Twitter Power Users

Why Tweetie For Mac Is Not For Twitter Power Users

Today is the Tweetie for Mac day. Everyone is talking about it and someone on Twitter is betting they will sell 5K licenses today alone. Given the popularity of Tweetie for iPhone, I think that guy is not far from the truth.

That said, I gave it try (could I resist?!?). In a nutshell, a very well designed app, very fast, very lightweight (maybe the best in terms of CPU and RAM usage) and with a great support for multiple accounts. At first sight, everything is there, together with the ability to choose among different URL shorteners and image posting services.

Despite all of that above, after only 20 minutes I switched back to Nambu, currently my favorite Twitter app for MacOSX. The reason for that is due to the immaturity of Tweetie when it comes to satisfy the needs of power users like me.

What does it lack of?

Saved Searches

Tweetie doesn’t provide users with the ability to save searches. When I turn my app off then on again, I want to find my searches there (I regularly monitor 5 to 10 search terms on Twitter) together with the number of new occurrences since my latest login.

Multiple Windows

Tweetie provides the ability to open searches in other windows, but it becomes very difficult to keep them ordered and easily usable. The Nambu’s approach is much better from this standpoint.

As you can see, I’m not asking that much. In my opinion, the distance between a client for a power user and a great “normal” one is not that much. If they only could add the ability to show search terms on the left sidebar together with all the other info and easily switch from one to another by just clicking on them, changing the content of the current window, it would be a well deserved thumb up.

Until then, I will stick with Nambu. Hope my feedback helps, though ;-)

  • Well, now that a new version is out, there is saved searches... And you may have overlooked the "Post with Tweetie" bookmarklet, or the fact that you can set a global hotkey to tweet. Also, there are quite a few mods you can find on MacThemes.net. Last I used Nambu, it didn’t have a bookmarklet, global tweeting hotkey nor themeing capabilities.

So yeah... *Don't be upset about this since I use Tweetie excessively and actually love it over the feature set Nambu has...*
  • Well, now Tweetie is actually my favorite client... all my "must-have" features are there :-)
