Why Google Chrome Is Going To Become The Best Browser For MacOSX

More than one month ago I reported that a developer (follow him on Twitter for more) was compiling and releasing the first pre-alpha builds of Google Chrome for Mac. It is Chromium, actually, the open source project behind Chrome, same as Chrome aside for the brand.

Google also started to make official pre-alpha builds available for testing and available here. A new feature is being added weekly and the main weakness I found so far is the lack of Flash support, that will be added later.

That said, despite I cannot use any flash content (YouTube videos, for instance), Google Chromium for Mac just became my favorite browser and I’m sticking with it for my daily browsing. There are lots of features missed, but it works far better than other popular and stable browsers.

1) Speed

Impressive speed, you can see with your eyes how faster Chromium for Mac is compared to Safari 4 or Firefox. Loading time of the browser itseld is also far better then the others.

2) Footprint

It rarely hits 180MB of RAM used (against 300 to 500 by Firefox or Safari), even if with many tabs open. Moreover, Chrome uses a separate process for each tab so the overall stability of the browser is much higher than the others and any issue affecting a tab/site doesn’t affect the others.

3) Usability

This point is not easy to explain, just use it and you’ll realize how better this browser is from the competitors.

Many not functional features reported previously are now working fine and the overall stability of the system is definitely much higher than the first time I tried it.

Is Google Chrome going to become the #1 browser for MacOSX? What do you think? Please leave your comments and participate in the discussion.

Chromium is by far faster than Safari, but it does not support Adobe Flash Player (a.k.a... cannot display YouTube videos). So why is Google Chrome so hot for Mac when it doesn't even show videos (and also isn't even available for Mac unless you count Chromium)?

You should really take a look at the stainless browser http://stainlessapp.com/
  • Stainless is not bad, but in the long term Chrome will definitely be a more reliable browser, IMHO.
  • despite not having a Mac, use Firefox and Chrome on my Windows XP. Yesterday I wrote that one of my blogs on how to install Chrome 2.0 and some tips for Linux and Mac, including the one you mentioned.
a hug and forgive my poor english ... rs.
  • you guys are greatly over-exaggerating the speed vs Safari 4.

I'm running Safari 4 build 5528.17 on Mac OSX and have been test loading several sites on it vs Chrome, and 90% of the time they are neck and neck, only time a see chrome loading "Much" faster is on sites with flash and chrome doesn't even load flash right now.

and usability ? i just don't see how it's that much different and honestly prefer Safari. The one nice feature in Chrome is the address bar is also the search bar......

should be interesting to see how this comes along, but be more objective about it.
  • Lots of builds everyday... I think before the end of July, we will have a final version.Sent from my BlackBerry®Luca Filigheddu+39 393 9386510luca.filigheddu@abbeynet.com

I think Chrome WILL be the best browser for Mac...if they ever get it out the door!

The fastest? quite probably. The best? Depends on the user.
