Here Is The First Internet OS: Jolicloud

First of all, I have to admit I don’t have a Netbook, despite I definitely love the idea of having a very lightweight (and cheap) portable computer powered by the powerful web apps that internet can provide.

Yesterday I came across a new OS (Ubuntu-based) aimed to make netbooks even more powerful thanks to customized and powerful desktop that makes the OS very similar to what we are used to when we use portable devices like the iPhone, Android G1 or Blackberry Storm.

Jolicloud, this is the name of the OS, puts all your web apps at your fingertip thanks to an easy-to-use GUI and an awesome design. Apps can be sorted by most-popular or by-category and the desktop hides to the user all the stuff that is not essential for a daily usage of the Netbook.

Here is how they define Jolicloud:

Jolicloud is an Internet operating system. It combines the two driving forces of the modern computing industry: the open source and the open web.

Jolicloud transforms your netbook into a sophisticated web device that taps into the cloud to expand your computing possibilities. The web already hosts a significant part of our lives: mails, photos, videos, and friends are already somewhere online. Jolicloud was built to make the computer and web part of the same experience.

Jolicloud is in alpha stage but I bet it’s going to become very popular, in particular if they succeed in convincing netbooks’ most important brands (Acer, Asus, Compaq, Dell, HP…) to pre-install it on their computers. To download and play with it, you need an invitation code. I don’t have one right now, but you can try to leave your email and hope they will send you one.
