Safari 4 vs Opera 10 vs Chrome for Mac: Safari 4 Is The Fastest

Safari 4 vs Opera 10 vs Chrome for Mac: Safari 4 Is The Fastest

The browser war under MacOSX has become more and more exciting during the past couple weeks.

The release of the first developer builds of Google Chrome for Mac, the release of Opera 10 Beta and, today, the final release of Safari 4 (available in beta already).

Today, after having installed it, I immediately realized that Safari 4 and Safari 4 Beta are MUCH different. Aside from the slightly different look and feel (minor changes, though), I reported a smaller footprint in terms of RAM usage on my old Macbook as well as a stunning speed, it was way faster than the previous beta version.

The tests I’ve done are far from being accurate, but I presume the error should be the same for each browser, so it should be enough to give an idea on the actual performances. Loading times are in seconds.

Safari 4: 17.98

Opera 10: 34.59

Chrome: 8.18

Aside from Facebook that, don’t ask me why, loaded blazingly fast the latest available release of Chromium, the other tests show that Safari 4 is the clear winner. I don’t have measures, but my perception is that Safari 4 Beta was definitely not that fast.

What do you think? Is Safari 4 final release the “fastest browser on the planet” ? I think so.

  • @Andrew there is a plugin that lets you do everything and even more (it also adds favicons to tabs). Its name is Glims. Test it out.
  • I was blown away - I never used the beta's of Safari 4.. when I installed it, I couldn't believe how fast it was.

There are a few things I can't figure out how to do in Safari, that I love in FFox 3, but if I can figure out those things I will switch. (open a group of tabs at startup, and how double clicking on a form field to open a drop down of previous entries without having to make a keystroke)
  • interested to see when you compare final releases and ff3.5 alongside
  • I also stopped using ff3 to use safari: on my macbook (with 4GB RAM), S. is very fast. let's wait for snow leopard now...
