Who Did Ever Say Twitter Is For Teenagers?

It seems some people lost sight of the fact that Twitter is an internet service and as most popular internet services it is not for everyone. It also seems that many journalists don’t actually know what Twitter is.

Today I read at least two articles on local (important) italian newspapers written around the statement of a 15 years old (an intern) who admitted that most of his friends don’t use Twitter and neither know what Twitter is. The problem is that this statement has been inserted into a MorganStanley report.

To be honest, I don’t find anything shocking here. I’ve been told that most teenagers don’t smoke cigars neither buy cars. What’s wrong? Please, make sure to perform a reality check here. Twitter IS NOT Facebook. Twitter IS NOT MySpace. Twitter is something completely different. I never thought teenagers could have ever used Twitter as I and many others do and can’t honestly find a way they can ever think of using it. Let’s face it, Twitter IS NOT for teenagers.

The point here is that this news brought up the evidence that many people involved in traditional media don’t really know what Twitter is, they only know some very superficial news and likely never tried it. Mark Evans made the point in this insightful piece:

Who really cares whether teenagers are using Twitter? I mean, different services appeal to different kinds of users. For now, teenagers love SMS to communicate with friends and family. It’s unobtrusive and a private way to communicate.

Twitter is a business tool for marketers, agencies, brands, bloggers, consultants. It’s not for teenagers neither for my wife. On the contrary, you will find millions of teenagers using MySpace or Facebook, services that better suit with the type of communication/interaction teenagers look for.

And yes, I don’t use a social network for chefs.

  • Luca,
I am putting together a presentation on social media and bumped into some interesting stats: people aged 45-54 are the biggest users of twitter (comScore) and the age group with the biggest growth on facebook is the 35+ (istrategylabs) ... stats show that highschool and college students are fleeing facebook (probably escaping from their parents?) ... if someone is looking for teenagers using social media, take alook at MMOs and MMORPGs
  • Who did say that?
