It helps that Mashable is getting itself quoted (and linked to) by the BBC (www.bbc.co.uk) - this must bring them a significant amount of traffic.

Very interesting article. not sure which one has higher integrity. Mashable has all those "5349857234095823049852340583 tools for sharing images online" posts that have limited value in my opinion, but are being RTed like crazy.
I read both.

Also, you're right that Mashable leverages social media very well. Too well, perhaps, in my case. I once commented that Mashable is like the Starbucks of the internet. They're on my Facebook, Twitter, Friendfeed, Tumblr, Google Reader... Plus, people keep RT-ing their articles on Twitter! I had to unfollow Mashable in some services so I don't get overloaded.

I think that, as Dave suggests, they are paying for the stolen docs they published on their blog. It makes sense...

Interesting analysis. Additionally, Twitter is a huge factor in driving traffic and according to a post by Dave Winer (http://www.scripting.com/stories/2009/09/22/the...), TechCrunch got taken off the Suggested User List last July. It's a tougher climb for TechCrunch, moving forward.
