Get A Real Life. Use Twitter and Facebook!

by Luca Filigheddu on November 20, 2009

Get A Real Life. Use Twitter and Facebook!

If someone tells you why don’t you get a real life since you use Twitter and Facebook too much, tell them you are actually doing that! Despite Twitter and Facebook are much different and with different targets (in terms of users), they are both all about real life and real relationships, no doubts about that. Here is why.

On Twitter I made a lot of new friends and each time I meet one of the people I chat with on Twitter, it’s like catching up with an old friend. I know more about some of my Twitter friends than my cousin or my uncle. I know that Ribbit’s VP Don Thorson was ill the past weekend and couldn’t travel as planned (sorry Don…). I know what my israeli friends at Radvision are doing, how Sageeb’s newborn is and that the weather in Ireland was horrible these days thanks to my pal Irish twitter friends (ok, nothing new or incredible here about Ireland…). Is this about online-only life? No, it isn’t.

On Facebook, despite I use it less, I can get other information and stay in touch with real friends I can’t deal with so often. A quick look at their Facebook page can potentially give me a lot of information about what they are up to. At a glance. I also found people I’ve not been in touch with for the past 15 years. Impressive right?

Last but not least, here is another example. Before Twitter, going to NY, San Francisco or Tel Aviv would have meant lunches and dinners alone. Now, I think that I could easily have dinner with different “friends” every day in those and many other cities worldwide. It would be like meeting old friends even if I never met them before. Is this about virtual and online-only life? No, it isn’t.

All that said, can someone ever think of those services as a “parallel” virtual online life? Nope. They are real. People there are real. Services like those are helping people increase their network of contacts, strengthen relationships and making new friends even in places they’ve never been before. I call this “real” social life.
