It's hard to rate the effectiveness of google wave right now, since it's a closed preview.

While reading your post I wondered if you used a mail notification gadget? (I guess you're using growl) and how much time you spend looking through your mail inbox?. I guess, when Wave goes public, there will be a lot of widgets and stuff to alert you when you get a new wave.

Recently I got into wave, and like many, I got struck thinking "what I do now?". I mean, I only have like 3 or 4 contacts at most. I started a wave with one just to try it out, and didn't had to wait much until he answered. But when I started waving with some other friend, well, I'm still waiting for the answer. Just like you and your friend.

Google Wave has been a disappointment so far to us users, but I think Google purposefully threw this unfinished product out there for everybody to figure out how to use it best. I don't think we have discovered its best use yet. Twitter also evolved and improved according to how users use it. Of course when Twitter was launched there were very few social/collaboration platforms out there, and the early adopters flocked to it quickly. Traction is a now problem with Google Wave, especially when even the geekiest early adopters are not excited about it.
