I just attended a coktail reception kindly offered by Avaya at the Hotel Westin in Loas Angeles, where most part of TMCNet Internet & Expo Conference attendees are staying. I had a nice chat with Rich Tehrani and Jon Arnold and we agreed that many people who used to attend VON conferences are here together with many people who used to work for Pulvermedia. VON was made of a community and this community is just moving on.

Richard Grigonis, Carl Ford, Todd Keefe and many others I used to meet during VON events are here at ITExpo, bringing to TMCNet their huge experience and unvaluable skills.
It’s funny, Rich told me that many people who used to attend VON do believe VON still exists and they are planning to go to Boston for VON Fall 2008. Their website is still up, so why not? I heard many people did show up for VON Europe in Amsterdam this spring, so I’m not surprised at all.
By the way, this is my first ITExpo so I look forward to taking a look around and comparing it to VON, a conference I used to attend regularly.

The demise of Pulvermedia and the resignation of their chairman Jeff Pulver, father of VON conferences, are a big KO for the whole VoIP market.
The biggest short-term problem I see here is all about communication between Pulvermedia and all the players, sponsors, delegates involved with VON conferences. The VoIP market is now taking decisions mainly based on “rumors” and not official news. Pulvermedia website is up and running and if you go to http://www.von.com everything seems like it has always been, but you cannot subscribe to the upcoming VON conference in Amsterdam.

My take is that no more VON conferences will take place in the next months, at least for this year. I hope things will be sorted out soon and VON can survive to this unexpected nightmare. I’m getting emails from people in the VOIP market asking If I had reliable news about VON and if there are other interesting conferences about VOIP somewhere. To me, this is a very bad sign… many companies have lost an important datum point and they deserve a clear and official response.
I can understand that Jeff Pulver, Carl Ford and all the other people involved with Pulvermedia cannot say anything officially, but I do believe that the VOIP market deserves an official response by someone.

Jeff Pulver announces today that he just resigned from Pulvermedia. For me it’s really a sad news since Jeff Pulver gives the name to Pulvermedia and without him, to me, there is no Pulvermedia. Jeff is not currently available to answer questions about this move, but I hope everything will become clearer in the following days
Jeff gave birth to Pulvermedia in 2005 and I remember the first time he told me about it during VON Stockholm 2005. So, what’s next?
I repeat what I said already: VON conferences are made by a big community that will never follow anyone other than Jeff. Loosing Jeff will never be a big deal by people involved in Pulvermedia, no doubt about it.
Good luck my friend.
