A couple of days ago, while traveling to Milan, I had the opportunity to put my hands on a brand new BlackBerry Storm, offered in exclusive In Italy by Vodafone.
Despite the initial impressions, mainly due to a superficial look at the reviews here and there over the internet, I have to say that the new touch-screen device by RIM is not that bad. The main point is that people used to the iPhone will find the Storm completely different. For example, in order to perform any action on the display you have to press the display itself while tapping with your fingers, something you can feel a little bit strange at first, but that lets you make much more on the UI, like drag and drop, for instance.
Speed was very good, even if some transictions effects between the different apps make you feel like the device is not responding quickly enough. In terms of typing on the virtual keyboard, I found it as fast as on the iPhone, even if longtime BlackBerry addicted users will find a real mini qwerty much better.
The main downside of the Storm is the lack of Wifi. On the other hand, since most plans combined with the Storm give users enough data for both email and browsing, I guess most of the time you wouldn’t use it. Personally, I would use it in my house and sometimes in my office, even if I would rather turn it off to save battery (I remind that Wifi is one of the main reasons for battery draining) most of the time.
All that said, Bold or Storm? I still have to take this decision and after this trial with the Storm, this is harder than what I initially thought. By the way, the Storm is sold at € 399,00 against € 469,00 of the Bold (both unlocked, as usual in Italy).
