Cooliris, an Awesome Way to Browse the Web

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Today I’m spending some time at the Plug&Play Expo in Sunnyvale and I have to say I’m impressed. There are almost 40 startups presenting and showcasing their services and products and some of them definitely rock. I mean, many services I’m coming across really solve a problem and add value to your internet experience as well as your “normal” life.

One of them is Cooliris. In a nutshell, they offer a plugin/extension for the most popular web browsers which let you get access to web content from any website and in particular for those containing rich multimedia content in a very effective and way.

They basically provide you a 3D view of the content that you can browse and manage very easily. You can also share it by email simply by a drag an drop.

In the example below, I just made as search “san francisco” on SmugMug. CoolIris immediately provided me with the results of the search in a unique 3D interface through which I can browse photos, share them or jump to the original web address.

You can also switch to a filmstrip view similar to that provide by Adobe LightRoom.

Major serach engines are available, Google, Yahoo, YouTube, Photobucket, Amazon, Flickr, Smugmug. Down here the same search (”san francisco”) with YouTube. As a result, I get all the videos related to that keyword.

If your website is “cooliris enabled” your visitors will be able to see your content in a very attractive and easy-to-use way. A Wordpress plugin is available too, you can can choose what content you want to show to your blog readers by setting up a stunning slideshow available from your blog.

There is much, much more and I highly recommend to try it out. Really a great service which makes browsing a complete new experience. Kudos to Cooliris for this wonderful and very useful application.

SmugMug Filmstrip Screwed Up by WP 2.6.1

Tags: , ,

Image representing SmugMug as depicted in Crun...Image via CrunchBase, source unknown

Regular readers will notice that the SmugMug filmstrip on this blog’s homepage is no longer shown. I guess the reason for this is the upgrade to WP 2.6.1 I made today.

I’m looking into it, but I’m likely going to perform a complete new makeover to this blog. Stay tuned!

SmugMug lets you store everything, not only Photos

Tags: , , , , ,

SmugMug, the popular professional photo sharing website, introduced SmugVault , a new service which lets users store not only photos, but many other types of files, including RAW (yessssss!), PSD and even excel and word.

The service is offered in collaboration with Amazon and costs are the following:

Storage costs 22 cents per gigabyte per month. If you upload the contents of a 2 GB memory card, you’ll be out 44 cents/month for storage.

There is a $1/month recurring charge.

Data transfer in is 30 cents per gigabyte. Data transfer out is 51 cents per gigabyte.

Monthly addition to your home electrical bill: Zero.

Finally a photo sharing file which lets you store and backup your RAW images. Another great move by my favorite service. Check it out!

Can anyone tell me why…

Tags: , , ,

… my yesterday’s post about SmugMug’s customer care is now #1 on Google? Higher than TechCrunch, higher than SmugMug, after 24 hours.

Can anyone help me to figure out why?

SmugMug, An Example of Excellent Customer Care

Tags: , ,

Just to share that my overall experience with the customer care of SmugMug, a professional web 2.0 photo sharing website where I upload my photos and keep my photo galleries (they host over 285M photos and have 300.000 paying customers…), is definitely excellent.

Quick email replies and they always keep focus on your problem until they solve it. My experience is really outstanding and I definitely recommend it if you are looking for the best alternative to traditional and maybe most popular websites like Flickr. Yes, it’s not free (even if cheap), but it is worth every single penny.

Good job guys, good job.
