Whisher, a new startup launched during DEMO 2007, claims to be a FON’s competitor.
Unlike FON, which supplies routers in order to let users share their internet connection, Whisher obtains the same result just with a software they provide users, which turns your Wifi router into a shareable Whisher router.
Behind this “competition” between these two companies, there’s something more. Whisher founder, Ferran Moreno, who is a former FON manager (who resigned before FON’s launch), claims to have been the first to have thought of the main idea behind FON, not Martin Varsavsky. Interesting. There’s an ongoing discussion between Martin and Ferran, you can read more here, while Om offers his perspective here.
In the meantime, I’ll check Whisher out. Given my latest bad experience with FON, it could be an interesting alternative. At the same time, I’m wondering if the key of FON’s success could be the fact they offer routers at a ridiculous price. If this assumption were true, I don’t see a prosperous future for Whisher.
