iPhone Battery Life

Today Apple announced that their new iPhone shipping on June 29th will deliver an higher battery capacity than that expected.

Here are the details:

- 8 hours of talk time
- 24 hours of audio playback
- 6 hours of internet usage
- 7 hours of video playback
- more than 10 days of standby

Those above are definitely fantastic numbers. If what Steve Jobs says is true, it will be the smartphone with the most efficient battery ever.

Since those numbers are mutually exclusive, let’s try to calculate an overall duration of the battery during a busy day at work.

I’ll share my experience: in “very very busy” days far from my desk (otherwise I usually use my IP phone instead), I make/receive about 3 hours of calls, read (and quickly write) emails continuously, let’s say a total of 30 minutes, and if I take a plane I use my iPod to listen to music. If I’d use the iPhone for that purpose, I would consume not less than 1-2 hours of “music-power”. I don’t usually use videos, it’s a rare event for me and surely I would use it for not more than 1-2 minutes.

All this said, let’s summarize:

- 3 hours of talk time (equals to about 9 hours of music)
- 0,5 hours of internet (equals to about 2 hours of music)
- 2 hours of music power

Transforming all into “music-usage” equivalent, it’s as if I used my iPhone for 13 hours listening to music. That means that I would still have about half battery power available at the end of the day. Really not bad.

Given that I considered an extremely busy day far from my desk, it would be surely a bargain and and it means that you can forget your charger at home.

I look forward to the first users’ reviews in order to verify if what Apple promises is true. Fortunately it usually is.
