iPhone vs Nokia N95

Robert Scoble is wondering whether the Nokia N95 is better than the upcoming Apple iPhone. There are a lot of features that the N95 includes and the Apple iPhone doesn’t. GPS, 3G and a 5Mpix camera just to name some. Robert is trying them out thanks to the N95 provided by Pure Mobile.

So, is the Apple iPhone all about usability? Well, at first sight, it seems to be better than Symbian, hence if you don’t need the extra features above, it can be the right choice for you.

Let’s keep this in mind: we know very well that there are tons of MP3 players out there but only one’s name is iPod. Period.

I agree Nokia N95 has svery strong points but the Apple iPhone has the scroll view as well as MAC OS X installed. The camera comparisons and others aren’t much of a big thing. Both are good. But it is difficult to choose which one to buy :S

IF ure looking for versility and multitasking then ure Best bet is the N95. I have one and trust me just the Voip feature thru Wifi is incredible. THe camera amazing ..no digital camera required anymore. Record video in high quality and play them on ure TV with amazing quality. When u weigh this out with the Iphone then Nokia N95 takes the weight.

I think that the guys at Apple have done the wrong thing. They came up with a phone that in some features is 2 years behind. No 3G??? 2 MP Camera??? No video recording? No MMS?? No GPS??? No software can be added to the iphone unless it is bought from Apple. No Tv Out?? I give them the Visual Voicemail option and the Touch-screen, neat features. However, the N95 has got all the ones I have mentioned before. It is cheaper (the iPhone costs $600 and must be bought in a contract, the N95 comes free with some contracts) And I say they did the wrong thing cause thay just gave ideas to other manufacturers on what to do next. IDIOTS!!

well in my point of view i have an n95 which i bought from tiger direct. i think it kicks the iphones ass personally. the only thing that the n95 cant do is have a touch screen. but the bad thing about touch screens are they attract smudges which the iphone will have significantly more because u are using your finger. i have a treo 75o for my touch screen phone. but i prefer no touch screen. its less complicated: no hidden menus. the n95′s strongest point is its multimedia features. the iphone in no way comes close to it. the iphone cant plug into the tv like the n95 can. u can download movies of the internet then put them on the big screen. 5 megapixel camera. which also does close to dvd quality video. the gps is amazing. and not to mention 3g and wifi combo. also has a video clling camera. the iphone does not have 3g which is totally surprising. the only reason i would get an iphone is to transfer my itunes on it. anyways i cant think of a reason of any kind why someone would get an iphone over an n95 thats just plain stupid. get an n95 and show iphone roadies that it sucks shit and n95 is better. which it truely is.

Nokia only focuses on phones! while Apple try to manufacture all kinds of amazing gadgets. Apple is trying to amaze people by their called spectacular i-phone which is never that close to the humbled Nokia n95. i phone only has this touch screen. touch screen that is hard to fix when it is broken, it has a built in stupid battery, that must be sent to the apple company to be fixed, it is one of the smartest move of apple, they get money from the users or buyers just to fix and change the unwanted built-in batteries (just like the ipods, have to wait more than a month to fix the batter of my ipod) . while nokia N95 is a multimedia device… GPS,5megapixel camera, WI-FI,…n more once this phone is in your pocket. Though this n95 phone is really consumes the battery easily because of all the features. People who has NOKIA n95 keeps complaining about the battery life that can last a day, because they just love playing it and explore the features of this wonderful phone. I-phone is far from the the Nokia N series.. that has been progressing for at least 2 years now. I’m from Asia n that 2 mega-pixel camera of iphone is an old phone almost three years ago…. Actually, Nokia n95 is awarded to be the best current cellphone in the world in 2007 of best of whats new. I have heard a leak from nokia that Nokia is again releasing another Nokia N series, (nokia N97) , a 30 GB memory card, a touch-screen, 3G , WIFI, 5 megapixel camera, GPS, mp3′s everything.. probably not that far from Nokia n95… I think nothing is better than a trusted cell phone company like NOKIA. Iphone the Asianjunk . hahahaha

Don’t forget this is apples first phone. it’s actually pretty good for a first phone hence some features. Apple always realeases an updated model of all thier products, and i have no doubt they won’t do the same for the Iphone. As for 3g, they are going to implant it eventually.

Only time would tell……

Hi there.

Weeks ago i sold my old x51v. Strangely with the difference of the colors, the x51v (2005) have the same style that a Iphone but everyone claim that iphone is innovative and stylish, i say that the iphone style is that same that (almost) any pda around here.

Iphone is in fact a pda cellphone-able it’s not a true cellphone. What’s good with it :stylus and power, what’s wrong with it :usability (one hand to grab the iphone and the other to push the screen). And (like every pda users knowns) touchscreen suffers of scratch. You can put a (ugly/and loss sensibility) screen protector.

But there are another trouble with the iphone :3rd parties are left out of this phone, from starter no java mobile, no able (currently) to develop programs to iphone and such. Opposing to Nokia where you can download the sdk, tools and such for free (and you can choice to c++ of java), Nokia (also Sony Ericssons, Samsung..) do the same things. And what’s the results :for symbian and j2me there are tons of programs, games and such. Even Microsoft allow to third parties to develop programs to their windows-ce smartphone.

IMHO Apple currently is selling a half-baked phone on purpose to sell a Iphone Second (de)Generations months later. You can buy today Iphone and then buy (again) a new iphone, just the same course of actions of many Ipod users.

Iphone (iphony) 1st generation :8gb, no memory, lousy camera, no video (why?), some bulky.
Iphone 2nd generation :16gb,a strange (and expensive) memory, 3-4mpx camera, videos, more small.
Iphone 3rd generations :20gb, memory, 5mpx camera, stable (yes, the first version can be a bit unstable), battery interchangeable, slim.

I agree with you Jorge. Apple usually doesn’t protect their customers. They launch a new product and an upgrade a few months after. Think of the Apple TV: a first model for $299 with only 40GB hdd, then, two months later, a 160GB version for $399. Why not at the same time? For iPhone I’m pretty sure to see the same story.

I heard that, its not possible to change the SIM. What happend if my SIM damaged?. What about MMS. In India, MMS and MP3 ringtone and FM radio are very popular. There is no way to compare I-phone and N95. Both are different segment. N95 pure multimedia and partially business features. N95 VOIP is terrific. Crystal clear voice. I-Phone no VOIP. Camera in N95 are equal to leading Digital camera.

Man im loving this. the ppl with n95 need to stick together. i have one who else does? we need to tell apple why theirs is inferior to ours. and we have to prove it. we have to take a stand and stop other ppl with iphones who say there phone is better when it isnt even close

This is really an apples and oranges (or whatever fruit Nokia is) comparison. Two entirely different devices for two entirely different market segments.

Comparing the iPhone feature for feature with the N95, it will come up horribly short. Just like the iPods come up short (e.g., no voice recording, no FM radio, etc..) when compared to many other handheld media devices.

Compare for example the iPhone’s bluetooth and that on the N95. The iPhone can use its bluetooth to pair with a headset and with a car kit, that’s it. The N95 (and many other phones) can in addition use it to transfer files, sync with a PC, connect bluetooth keyboard, GPS and many other devices, you can connect it to a PC over bluetooth and use it as a modem, etc.

The iPhone is also not open for 3rd party developers, while smartphones have a plethora of 3rd party software available. As such, it would be a misnomer to call it a smartphone and you can’t really compare it with them.

The point is, the iPod isn’t considered one of the best in its class because of a feature checklist. It is because Apple is good at UI – they make devices that do a few things, and do them well. There’s that ‘it just works’ factor.

The iPhone is for those who want an iPod, a cell phone and an Internet tablet in one. Wrapped up in that Apple UI experience.

The N95 is for the power user or gadget geek that wants the top of the line swiss army knife of cell phones.

Have you heard that the iphone reqires you to buy ringtones and that there phone has very little ringtones. Apple likes to steal money from us. I used to have the ipod but the battery keeps breaking and becoming low, they want us to send the battery so they can get profit. look at the size of the thing and the features suck.

that’s true John… why do they built things such iphone with built-in battery? thats one of the Apple’s smart but stupid idea… (if u don’t have the service plan or the warranty then your iphone or ipod breaks, watever that ithing is… u have to isend that smart ithing to the icompany, to ifix for imonth.. heheh u won’t have igadgets for at least a 3 weeks, iguess u have to pay for that if u don’t have iwaranty) not like nokia, n other cell or smartphones. You can buy another battery once the battery of the phone breaks down.

Nokia n95 and Apple are great phone, as for me i love top gadget and top of the line phone, so i got myself an Nokia N95, My friend in the other have have an Apple phone, Both are great phone and it hard to compare because both phone have diff feature. Nokia N95 have alot of feature that will blow your mind out. Apple have all this cool thing you can do with the phone like fancy way to display your picture or when you tilt your phone left or right your screen display whatever way your phone is tilt too. So it depend on what you like instead of what is a better phone. I love the Nokia N95 and i can’t say it is better then the apple phone because Apple phone have cool touch screen and it is fun to play with and etc etc…. Anyway if you really want to know what you like more buy both phone and play with it, Then you can tell what you like but then again Iphone like to be a Lil SOB because it only out for Cingular

By the time iPhone comes out with all the features the N95 has, Nokia will have developed the N96, N97, N98, etc and will still be miles ahead from what Apple is doing. Don;t you think that the guys at Nokia already thought of touchscreen? (Maybe an N95i? an N96?) Visual Voicemail? C’mon, Nokia knows how to do phones.

I agree Juan, although apple did a great job with their first fancy cool iphone, nokia still has the best phones. i’ve search all the nokia n series and a new nokia n97 pops up. Try to search NOKIA n97…. (30 gb, 5 megapixel, touchscreen, etc..)… nokia n95, iphones killer.

Ya but have u checked the pix of the nokia n97? doesnt look like it has the sickass dual slide, and it looks pretty weird. Personally i prefer not to have touch sensitive things (i have bad experience with the gay chocolate phone) id rather push buttons… Im dying to get a N95, but i need to save my money for a good car, other than the car, the N95 is #1 on my list of things to buy.

yeah.. same here. i have problems about touchscreens… they’are really hard to fix.. apple is a smart ass company. they built their i-products sell it expensive. like the ipod with an built in i-battery like the i-phone once its broken have to send it to the apple company. no i-pod for at least a month… i dont know much about the iphone yet. but i’m pretty sure it can’t beat the sicked nokia n95. great features and fun to play with… i have mine for almost six months now. tho the battery consumes quickly because i play the phone atleast 4 hours a day. its a great phone. i wonder when wil the nokia released the N97 or there myt be nokia n95i .

I bought my iphone on june 29th and sold it July 1, after reading about the n95 and actually playing with the iphone.
The lack of game, instant messaging, inability to add ring tones, and no video recording is mainly why i sold my iphone. I really love the other features and the phone but i am a gadget geek. i know i will love the n95

Robelto, were you able to use the iphone with one hand only ? Like dialing a number or sending an SMS ? I think this is important, since sometimes you are not able to use both hands to manage your mobile phone.

I wonder how many people here have used the IPhone. I said it before, not only is it as nice to use as in the commercials, but its better.

I just watched a demo of the N95 on Youtube and GOOD GOD!!!!, Why in the hell are there so many icons everywhere. Dude, make it simple and a pleasure to use, don’t require people to have a computer science degree to operate.

Kris, I got your point. I don’t have an iphone myself, so I cannot really give my thoughts. Comparing the two phones, we get that the N95 has much more features. But, I think that you’re right on usability.

IHPONE OWNS HANDS DOWN I MEAN THE FEATURES ARE ALMOST THE SAME AND N95 HAS MORE BUT THE N95 IS TOO SLOW AND THE IPHONE IS FASTER AND ITS 8GB AND THE PRICE IS RIGHT FOR AN IPHONE OVER THE N95

A smartphone with no touch screen, and no full keyboard?? That means you have to press a button up to three times to get the desired letter!! How are you supposed to quickly send an email or text message like this?? Okay, so webpages load up a little faster. But having an internet capable phone with no touch screen is just like having a computer with no mouse or track pad!! The only advantage this phone has is the awesome camera. To bad you can’t zoom in on a picture with your finger tips after you take it!! And if you think Real Player is better than having an ipod then I can see why you would like this phone

Everyone forgets that the Nokia has a TV out so you can use your telly to surf the web, watch video’s or plan routes with your GPS maping software. The iPhone is only a 2mb carmera and doesn’t even take video. People also moan about battery life but If you play an ipod video non stop it only lasts about 6 hours. The battery life for the N95 is respectable considering it can do so much.

There is a certain kind of person who likes apple products and will defend then to the death. There is no changing their minds but for everyone else, read the comparisons and check out the specs. They speak for themselves…the N95 wins overall.

Back again to this site after the expected launch of the iPhone in the UK. I had had the oppotunity of trying it in the US, tried here in the UK and still think the same, a phone that would have been the “must have” 3 years ago, but now, it’s miles away even from the Viewty from LG. I must say that I am dissapointed about apple. When did they become such an icon brand? It used to be the brand we would look up to, now…Intel processors (virus, welcome onboard), ipods (useless mp3 players), iPhone (useless phone) Expensive and fashionable devices. Have you realise that everytime apple launches a new device the previous one becomes inmediately obsolete? Anyway, back to business … my N95 has been working beautifully since I bought it months ago, I’ve found millions of applications (free and shareware) that have increased the usabilty of my phone, even the ones designed for apple (irony???) I got some 6Gb memory cards at a very good price and have up to 18Gb of storage (www.mobymemory.com) What else can I ask for?

I have an n95 for a month now.An excellent phone which is from an entirely different class.I started from 6600,7610.6630,6680,n70,n73 and now the n95 shifted to sony for w810,p900,and p990 was the last before n95.Iphone has a very different kind of amusing interface and ppl dats it wat kind of mobile phone has a built in battery, poor camera way behind .

havent you ppl seen on net the new touch ui of series 60 third edition. It would rock when it is launched.it has a touch screen. An on screen keypad
and loads of new features and open to anything.Nokia was the first company to make a mobile phone .so i guess it would always be on top.

as for memory of iphone the new n95 8gb beats it like hell.

One thing you guys forget is that the iphone has an actual OS on it (unlike Symbian, which is a toy compared to OS X) so Apple will continue to add functionality to it over time. You don’t see this with Nokia. Sure, you’ll see people making 3rd party apps for it, but once you buy the N95, you’re stuck with the functions that it has out of the box. Also, I’ve tried both and found that the N95 web browser is crap compared to Safari. Apple doesn’t pack the iphone full of features because they know everyone uses only a handful of features on a regular basis anyways. I, for one, only use the phone for calling, browsing the web, listening to music and using the organizer. Iphone does all of these (calling might be debatable) MUCH better than the N95.

I’m selling my iphone on ebay after two weeks because the iphone just have too many compatibility issues such as having to convert audio and video to a certain format,no GPS,can’t remove battery, customization is difficult and so on.

Please check out the iclone or the meizu m8 minione.Coming early next year!!!!!!!!!!!!

i’m confused! I have an N95 and I don’t like it. Its clumsy, crashes a lot, and is very big in my pocket. I am a big apple fan and have had many many ipods in my time. Since the iPod came out I have always wanted a phone function on it because it would make my life so much easier. I feel that the iPhone lends itself to be more of a PDA than a phone.

Apple have stated that there are lots of functions that can be added through a simple software update. Also, there is a block on the iPhones processor which suggests that apple can relase more power with more updates. The battery issue doesn’t bother me. And the lack of GPS isn’t an issue to me either. I have a TomTom for GPS… i dont need to carry a GPS unit around with me, but i do need to carry a phone, mp3, internet and media library. I’m going to buy an iPhone, but I may wait for the 3G model, if its not out by June…

I own both and these phones are worlds apart, The iphone has 8gb or 16gb but with no sd card, but the n95 has an sd slot which you can easily put a 16gb sd card into. This is convinient as you dont need to usb the phone or install drivers as you can just use a card reader and the n95 support usb mass storage profile, The n95 is great i like how well the gps works unlike the gps thats not on the iphone, I hate the iphone ringtone setup,I think the battery life is very very unacceptable on the iphone, the iphoen actually plays mp3′s not like the ipod, but the n95 supports a whole lot more file formats, and the n95′s camera is excellent, video quality and sound are excellent on the n95, The 2mp camera on the iphone is just crap not even a flash or video recording. the touch screen for typing is really stupid some icon are too close, it should have a stylus.
the iphone is just an overly expensive ipod with a sim card, oh and it doesnt have 3G support how lame, hspcda and wcdma are not supported just oldy gprs and edge. i would rather the n95, easy to unlock and a lot more feature packed
