How Many People Use Twitter From Their Mobile Phone?

How Many People Use Twitter From Their Mobile Phone?

It is pretty clear that something important is happening around Twitter and the tremendous growth reported by the latest data published by Nielsen is a clear sign of a trend we can’t ignore.

To be honest, there are a couple questions I would be very interested to get answered.

1) How many people do actually use Twitter from their webpage?

The numbers released by Nielsen refer to the time spent on the service (just website?) only, not where the users are using those services from. I personally find their webpage the less conmfortable way to use the service, but maybe it’s just me. In any case, the growth is impressive: +3712%.

2) How many people use Twitter from their mobile phone? Which % of the total?

Since the arrival of the iPhone, I do firmly believe this number is very, surprisingly, high. I guess 20 to 50%. For example, speaking for myself, It’s clear that when I am on my computer I’m logged in on Twitter more but I actually use it less. The number of tweets sent, re-tweets or even the number of tweets I pay attention to, is much, much higher from my Blackberry than from my Mac. For more information on who the Twitter mobile users are, take a look here and here.

Mobile connections allow for status updates at times previously not possible. “This ability to be mobile, it’s a two-way street,” Lenhart said. “It allows people to reach you, and allows you to stay in touch with people when you’re on the go. In many ways it’s a distillation of media we’ve seen. It distills it down to its essence and puts it into 140 characters or less.

Micro-bloggers are just as likely to consume other media as the average Internet user, but more likely to read or view it through a mobile format.

If this were true, Twitter would be more a disruptor of the mobile industry rather than the web, more a v2.0 of the SMS rather than a new way to chat.

That said, It would be great to find a pretty accurate information about this segmentation. For this reason, I’m really looking forward to the data that will come out from the 140 Characters Conference taking place in NYC next week, where pal Jeff Pulver is putting together a stunning lineup of “characters“.

While the original scope of the event was to explore “the effects of twitter on: Celebrity, “The Media”, Advertising and (maybe) Politics”, the scope of the event has expanded and we will be covering these topics and a lot more. #140conf will be taking a look at twitter as a platform and will be taking a look at some of the industries which have been disrupted by the advent of twitter.

If you haven’t booked your seat yet, please do it now. I guess the amount of useful information coming from that event will be impressive and highly valuable for everyone.
